These tuners have a thumbwheel locking function that holds your strings firmly in place. This prevents the strings from slipping and allows you to cut off excess strings. You don't have to wrap the rope around the post several times like using an unlocked machine tuner. Just put the rope through the hole in the nail and turn the thumb wheel to fix it in place. My daughter knocked over my Epi SG and snapped off one of the stock tuner knobs, so I ordered these as replacements. They fit right on and are waaay better than the original garbage tuners that came on the guitar. I never realized how bad the Epiphone tuners were until I replaced them. These hold the tuning no matter how long I play.. Are they the best money can buy? Probably not, but they are good quality and worth every penny if you don't want to spend a lot! Now I need another set for the LP I just picked up..
