It’s nice having the old school thermometer, as opposed to the digital style. Less issues, no batteries. Not sure why it’s asking for the age range of the toy. It’s not a toy, and not something I’d want a kid to be playing with.

This type of oral thermometer is the most accurate type compared to the battery thermometers. It is the only kind I trust to get the true temperature. For me, the battery ones have a different temperature reading within a few seconds of each use. I have been using this type thermometer for 40 years. I was only able to find this type at Rite-Aid, and now Amazon. Great Accuracy.

I’ve seen the negative reviews about the line not going down and I thought I was in the same boat. But I discovered two things: 1) you have to rotate it back and forth to catch the correct angle to actually view the reading. Otherwise it looks maxed out. And 2) it takes way more than a few shakes to get it to go down. Hold on tight and wag that thing for 60 seconds and it will work.I calibrated it against our rapid digital thermometer. It reads a half degree warmer. But readings from this device are more consistent.

I love the old fashioned simplicity of this product. No batteries to wear out or wonder about… no error messages… just stick it under your tongue and wait a few minutes. Then look at it again. My instinct is to trust German precision engineering and manufacturing. I’ve had one of these for many years, but one time had trouble finding it in my bedroom for awhile. So I decided to get a couple extra to have on hand just in case anything should really happen to the one I had. Grateful to find this product still being sold.

If you are looking for a replacement for a mercury thermometer this is NOT it. I have always used mercury thermometers and have no problem whatsoever shaking them down to use. This one you have to shake and shake and shake--more than 20 times every time I tried--to get it down. It is harder to read than mercury thermometers and not as accurate. I did 3 test temperatures vs my mercury one and it was off by 0.2, 0.3 and 0.6 (always low). This is still more accurate than a digital one but the shakedown time/effort was ridiculous. I tried putting it in the holder as some other reviews suggested and it went flying and broke. Not worth the time or the money!

I agree with other reviewers that those who complain are probably revealing their inexperience with glass thermometers. I bought the two pack, and their readings are consistent with each other, and they yield temperature readings very close to my better digital thermometers. You need to shake down the liquid before taking a reading. The liquid in this thermometer is significantly more difficult to shake down than the old mercury thermometers, I presume because mercury is much more dense than this liquid. One reader said it works to put it in a sock and swinging it rapidly. Also, they are fairly slow. It takes 2 or 3 minutes to get a good reading. The drawbacks are simply due to the nature of glass thermometers. However, the fact that they don't need batteries means they will always work. The batteries in digital thermometers seem to give out at the most inopportune times, so it's really nice to have a glass thermometer handy as a backup.Note: Amazon's "Rate Features" section for this thermometer had "Accuracy," (which is fine), and "Warmth," and "Thickness," (which is just plain weird).

I bought this at the recommendation of a patient advocacy group. I need to get an accurate daily temperature and this is said to be more accurate than digital. Once, when I got a very high fever, I used two of these thermometers at once, and they read the same, so it must be accurate.Be aware that this is going to be more bulky than digital or mercury, but since digital is inaccurate and mercury is poisonous, it is the best alternative I know of.You will also have to shake it down very firmly. Hold it by one end and whip your wrist a few times. Be sure to do this over something soft like a rug. I am very clumsy so I sometimes drop mine and break them.
