It was fun to build. I had to do no troubleshooting to get it to work. Looks nice on my counter.

This kit markets itself as a beginner-friendly soldering project for kids or students, but the inclusion of an surface-mount IC makes it unnecessarily challenging. Even though it's just one chip, soldering it accurately is crucial, and mistakes can compromise the entire project. My 11-year-old was excited to try this, but I ended up doing the SMD soldering myself, which took away from their experience.Unfortunately, we’re currently stuck. The motor doesn’t spin, and the music doesn’t play, which has led to quite a bit of frustration. I’ll be rechecking all the solder joints and troubleshooting the circuit, but my kid’s enthusiasm has already taken a hit.On the positive side, the idea behind this project is charming, and if everything worked as intended, it would be a delightful kit. However, for a kit aimed at beginners, the lack of user-friendly design and the potential for issues make it a poor choice for kids or anyone new to soldering. I’d recommend looking for a kit that skips SMD soldering or includes more robust troubleshooting instructions to avoid this kind of disappointment.

Third world instructions. If you want "detailed" instructions, you have to scan a QR code. Nope, 0 trust. Looks shady. Returned!

I always judge these based on how “beginner” it is, and this one is pretty good. Even beginner kits are really more for practice rather than to teach you how to solder or what each component is, so they are designed with the assumption that the user will have basic knowledge of electronics. That said, you can get by with this one without that knowledge. It would take much more time, but the instructions are pretty thorough and include lots of clear pictures, so it’s a great kit for beginners. This one has a motor, which adds a tiny layer of complexity, but nothing beginners can’t handle if done carefully., I look forward to assembling it.

I have not been able to actually solder everything together but seems like it will be great practice on soldering boards. This will be my first time actually soldering on a board. in the past ive only been able to solder wire splices together for automotive purposes and copper pipes for fittings so this seems like a great way to step up my skills and maybe even enough replace the worthless ps5 sticks with some hall effect ones so i can stop spending $70 on new controllers

If this were much more expensive than it was, I would have rated this 1 or 2 stars lower. But for under $20, this is a fairly good kit.The instructions aren't all that detailed but I didn't find them all that necessary. But that's because I have extensive electronics experience and was teaching my son. If he was doing this alone, he would have struggled. It is a bit smaller than I was anticipating, but that's not a huge deal.Including a SMD IC in a beginner's soldering kit was a questionable decision. I had to do this step. And luckily I wasn't working with a $20 hobbyist soldering iron.
