The Mitutoyo 103 series outside micrometer set has a vernier scale in inch units for taking precise outside diameter (OD) measurements, and a ratchet-stop mechanism for uniform pressure during adjustment. The micrometer frame has a baked enamel finish for protection and durability. The vernier scale on the thimble and sleeve is graduated to 0.0001", with a satin chrome rust- and glare-resistant finish. The spindle and anvil have flat measuring faces and are carbide-tipped for wear resistance. A spindle lock helps provide secure locking of the measurement position. This set includes 12 micrometers in 1" increments (0 to 1", 1 to 2", 2 to 3", 3 to 4", 4 to 5", 5 to 6", 6 to 7", 7 to 8", 8 to 9", 9 to 10", 10 to 11", 11 to 12"), 11 standards in 1" increments (1", 2", 3", 4", 5", 6", 7", 8", 9", 10", and 11"), one adjustment wrench, and a fitted box.

Micrometers are precision measuring instruments that use a calibrated screw to measure small distances. These measurements are translated into large rotations of the screw that are then able to be read from a scale or a dial. Micrometers are typically used in manufacturing, machining, and mechanical engineering. There are three types of micrometer: outside, inside, and depth. Outside micrometers may also be called micrometer calipers, and are used to measure the length, width, or outside diameter of an object. Inside micrometers are typically used to measure interior diameter, as in a hole. Depth micrometers measure the height, or depth, of any shape that has a step, groove, or slot.

The mics themselves are great. The box, while far from bad just didn't live up to older Mitutoyo boxes I have seen, but I didn't buy this set for the box I bought it for the mics which are superb!

We use this exact same set at my job site. It holds up to rigorous daily usage, with the smaller pieces in the 0-6" range recording sometimes up to hundreds of measurements per day, and the larger bits seeing use less frequently. They go out on a yearly calibration cycle and have been in service for quite a long time. I would recommend buying anything made by Mitutoyo or Starrett for a professional machine shop or inspections department, but for light home or hobby mechanic use, it isn't worth spending an entire months salary on a set like this.
