The Mitutoyo 103 series outside micrometer has a vernier scale in inch units for taking precise outside diameter (OD) measurements, and a ratchet-stop mechanism for uniform pressure during adjustment. The micrometer frame has a baked enamel finish for protection and durability. The vernier scale on the thimble and sleeve is graduated to 0.001", with a satin chrome rust- and glare-resistant finish. The spindle and anvil have flat measuring faces and are carbide-tipped for wear resistance. A spindle lock helps provide secure locking of the measurement position. This set includes four micrometers in 1" increments (0 to 1", 1 to 2", 2 to 3", 3 to 4"), three standards in 1" increments (1", 2", 3""), one adjustment wrench, and a fitted box.

Micrometers are precision measuring instruments that use a calibrated screw to measure small distances. These measurements are translated into large rotations of the screw that are then able to be read from a scale or a dial. Micrometers are typically used in manufacturing, machining, and mechanical engineering. There are three types of micrometer: outside, inside, and depth. Outside micrometers may also be called micrometer calipers, and are used to measure the length, width, or outside diameter of an object. Inside micrometers are typically used to measure interior diameter, as in a hole. Depth micrometers measure the height, or depth, of any shape that has a step, groove, or slot.

Mitutoyo manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology equipment, and related systems. The company, founded in Tokyo in 1934, formed Mitutoyo America Corporation in 1963 with headquarters in Aurora, IL.

Ordered this product on Saturday December 31st got a call on the 5th of January that the Micrometer set is on back order with their supplier until April but that they could order it from another company for $60 more. I figured I would take the chance as I really did not want to wait 3 months for the order to arrive to me. I should have just cancelled it when I had the chance because the the Micrometer set I received did not match the set shown on Amazon.com or Toolfetch.com product page. Firstly the the picture shown on this page shows friction thimbles on the 0-1" and 1-2" micrometers and ratchet stops on the 2-3" and 3-4" micrometers the product being sold has ratchet stops on all 4 micrometers. Secondly they are described as being Vernier micrometers on both websites but the real product lacks the Vernier marking on the sleeve. Lastly I've been on the phone for 2 days trying to return this product and it has been a really frustrating experience.
