Yeah, I don't know anything about katanas. I'll just tell you what I've noticed. The sword did not want to come out of the scabbard when I first got it. It was so stuck in there that I thought it was screwed in place or something. I couldn't find anything trapping it in there, so I just yanked until it came out. It was covered in wood bits from the inside of the scabbard. It's oiled up, so the wood just sticks to it. It was covered in wood bits because the habaki (blade guard) doesn't really fit in scabbard. I have no idea if this is normal and needs to wear in or what. It definitely doesn't come out or go in smoothly. It's like they made the scabbard, jammed the sword in there, and decided that it was close enough. From what the internet tells me, that makes this somewhere on the lower end of the spectrum, but not the worst. The really good, handmade stuff, fits snugly, and won't fall out, but isn't too tight. The real garbage doesn't even hold the sword in place. The lower end, but not bottom end stuff needs to wear in. Then again, this is supposed to be inspected, according to the listing. Whoever inspected this did a pretty terrible job.The edge pattern (hamon if you're feeling Japanese) is barely noticeable. I honestly didn't even think it was there until I held it up to the light just right. I guess that's fairly normal. I was looking around at some much more expensive katanas, and they aren't all that different. The ray skin isn't ray skin. It's just plastic. I'm not an expert on that by any means, but I do have the internet. It matches every description of fake ray skin. It's soft, has the big gaps between the grains and deforms easily. The little spikes that are on real ray skin are also missing. The balance point is a few inches above the tsuba. That's apparently where it's supposed to be. Like I said, I'm not a katana expert. The blade is very heavy, so it's definitely not balanced right on the tsuba. That's not where it's supposed to be balanced anyway. That blade is definitely heavy. You could definitely workout with it. It certainly doesn't feel like aluminum. It is reasonably sharp. It will cut paper, but not in the way you might be thinking. It rips through the paper with its weight. I like to cook and I sharpen my knives to the point where they will cut paper with the knife sitting in place. In other words, you hold the paper and hit the knife with the paper. This is nowhere near that sharp. Watch playing around with it too much, unless you have a way to sharpen it. It definitely will dull if you cut random stuff with it. A professional sword sharpener will charge you 20x what this cost to sharpen it, so...maybe don't dull it for no reason. The saya (scabbard) is pretty on the outside, even if it doesn't fit the sword all that well.

The product came in a nice taped up box. The sword itself is nice and shiny. It wasnt loose and came in pretty sharp. The hamon looks a little faded though. I cant really tell if the hamon is real. I think its real enough. Overall, the blade is a work of art and beautiful. When i practice, its workout since its heavier than my other 1045 katana.
