After using bath towels to protect my helmets when working on them I finally 'invested' in a helmet donut. They are stupid cheap and this one does the job. It doesn't 'cradle' the helmet, but its shaped such that the helmet isn't going to roll off onto your work surface. Does the job it was purchased to do without a lot of $$.

I bought this one and two of the fabric ones. This is the one I use at home. I took one of the fabric ones to work and the other is in my closet. With this one my helmet stays put so I can change the lens or clean it. It's not especially grippy, but the helmet doesn't slide around in it. With the fabric ones I had to hold the helmet still for everything. They were only good for not banging up my helmet or the thing it was on.
