These are not sharp out of the box, so not good for a beginner. Just save up and buy some Pfiel gouges.

I’m just starting out and wanted a quality set. My friend who has been carving for years recommended these. they where sharp out of the box and very good quality. I am taking a carving class and there are students who have paid more fore sets from Asia. They do not compare. You can tail these where hand crafted with care.

I’ve been using narex products for all my life but these chisels was quite an experience. After first use I Couldn’t believe how wood can damage chisel! The “steel” it’s just rolling like It’s made from aluminium or so. No any luck with sharpening either!Customer service terrible as well!I emailed them that their product is made from butter and they said that they are denying this return request because it’s out of the return policy timeline.I guess this is not about time it’s lying about quality and price what they’re being asking for this product..Don’t buy those and keep your money for professional tools is my advice.

Using these for a short while, excellent set. Sizes are good for mini carvings but not quite for ultra fine work. The bevels are a little steep and excellent for hogging out bulk and moving deep. These stall against end grain due to the aggressive nature of the tools. You can always sharpen them to a different bevel but these are also beginner tools and where I think these help out beginners is it gets the job done quit and are small enough to be used by hand.I'd recommend beginners also grab a whittling knife or another straight night with a fine point to assist with additional detail.

Narex got a good rep based on their chisels a few years back (heck, I own a set). But this? It's like no one ever bothered to explain the idea of "quality" to them. This set is not made of ground steel (like some cheaper sets you can buy on Amazon), but rather stamped metal folded into shape and "sharpened". I use that adjective lightly here - the attached picture shows the V-tool that came with set, featuring a tip that looks like it ground while the machinist was in the midst of an Oktoberfest celebration. This is quality that would make Harbor Freight recoil. Three of the tools have issues, two (like the one pictured) are obvious with just a casual glance and should never have passed inspection. On the plus side, the box it came in was first-rate! #damnwithfaintpraise.

Nice chisels, they did require honing, the bevels had significant scratches. Although I feel these are nice carving chisels they are not a starter set as stated. Most are too big for any detail carving. It needs a smaller gouge in this set. They are definitely of higher quality than some chisels of this price range.

I have been tinkering around with hand carving for a few month now, and quickly found I needed a little more precision than my pocket knife was giving me, so I went out and bought some cheap chisels at a department store. Those will be for beating on with a hammer.Next, I got a more expensive Stanley Fat Max chisel and could not believe the difference in quality. I felt I needed something else to help me make specialty cuts and patterned gouges, so I ordered these. There is not much comparison between what these can do and even the reasonable quality of the Stanley chisel. They are sharp, easy to control (the short handles help a lot with that). These chisels really shine at cutting across the grain, I had yet to get tear out with them. They cut on the mark and don't take out anything extra. For the price, for someone who wants to get started without investing a fortune, these are highly recommended. Just take your time to learn proper techniques and for heaven's sake, watch your hands, these things are sharp!
