These are two very nice dovetail chisels. Great quality. Good value. The Japanese-style hollow-backs are the least attractive feature. I prefer solid backs...which means a chisel can live several life-times of sharpening's.

I don't really care that these look like Japanese chisels but are not. They are well made and perform well.

I purchased the 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 versions of the chisel. These chisels feel good in my hand, seem well balanced and the finish on them is very good for the price of the tool. I have several other Narex Chisels and I have not been disappointed with the fit, the finish or the overall performance of the tools. The chisels came with a light coating of clear lacquer that cleaned off very easy. I checked the flatness of the back with my 1000 grit water stone and then moved up through 4000 / 8000 and the backs polished to a mirror with a very minimal effort. I then turned it over and polished the bevel on the 4000 and made a very small micro bevel to raise a wire burr and then tested it on end grain pine to take a very thin, clean full length shaving. I was up and running with these products in about 15 minutes.

Great tool. Very sharp right out of the package; minimal honing required. Keeps an edge well. Much cheaper than typical Japanese chisels- better quality than expected, considering. These chisels are for cleaning up dovetail and finger joints only! I use different chisels for tongue and groove or even mortise and tenon. Although depending on you mortise it might work I guess...

Fine materials and feel, and they look the part from a distance; unfortunately, I find that the sides are too thick to get really close into the corners without grinding and polishing the sides of this tool to a much finer angle for close dovetailing. If I'm going to go to that effort, I can start with a less expensive chisel to alter. Inasmuch as I now own these chisels, and they look and feel so good, I will fashion them into a more complete version of a dovetail chisel with acute (sharper) sides.

These chisels are cast. Not forged. Not stock removal hss. They appear to be cast from inspecting the hollow. I'm not sure why they get good reviews. They have the appearance of being nice. The collars are thin gauge metal painted to look brass. Severely disappointing after Lee valley review. Did anyone really look at these????

Overall nice chisels. The 3/4 chisel had a divot on the back that I wasn't thrilled about. I lapped most of it away but it still took me over an hour at the sharpening station. If it was a paring chisel I would be more upset but because I will use these mostly for chopping it's not the end of he world. With the indentation in the back of Japanese chose they don't register flat 100% anyways. Overall decent chisels for he money.

Very well made chisels, an excellent value. The moment you delve into slightly more specialized tools, like these japanese style chisels, prices tend to explode - not so here. Thanks to their shape, you will be able to clean up those pins and tails without nicking their edges. The backs are hollow, meaning you can get them flat much easier than their western siblings. I wish they made a 1/4" and even an 1/8", I would gladly buy those too.
