The gimbal head is heavy! There is some resistance when you rotate the head left or right, more resistance than I want. But for a amateur bird photographer like me, and only costing a 100 bucks, it is worth the cost. Good build quality for far, in about 30 hours of usage.

My first thought using it today was I shouldn't have waited so long. I followed one of the many walkthroughs of disassembling and using some light white grease to replace the gunk it came with. Smooth and works well. It's heavy since it is the metal version but I knew that going in and it is infinitely more cost effective than the carbon fiber versions. It's been mentioned but the best way to get the 'locked' allen bolt off is to put that piece of the gimbal in a boiling pot of water for 30-45 seconds. Won't harm the metal and loosens up the bolt so that it can be removed. Once you remove the bolt the first time, it is easy to remove again. I'm planning on a yearly re-grease regimen. You can probably get away with longer but I just look at it as basic maintenance. As for functionality, it makes life so much easier with the heavy long lenses when birding. This lower cost option is just as good as a friends high end gimbal.

Ineccepibile.

After reading the reviews I was torn on this product. I needed a gimbal for occasional use, and didn't fancy dropping £250-500 on something I had no experience of.I'd recently bolted a Sigma 60-600 lens with 1.4TC on the front on my D500 and as excellent as the Three Legged Thing Albert 2.0 tripod is, the air head controls are better managed with a small zoom or prime, not a lens body combo in excess of 4kg. As soon as you undid the plate control if you didnt have a strong grip of the lens the whole unit would tip quite violently. This gimbal has rectified this completely and allows a fluid movement in the horizontal and vertical planes to allow effective subject panning. For the price the build is exceptional, and only a suboptimal grease choice blunts the experience slightly. I intend to get the lithium grease out now I know I'm keeping it.So overall initial impressions are very positive and I now feel far more confident that the camera/lens combo is not only stable, but that i have a better chance of capturing more/better images as I have significantly more control.

The biggest complaint people have with this gimbal is the grease. I used it with the factory grease for a few times, but I too ended up replacing it with a teflon based lubricant made for trailer hitches. I cleaned out the factory grease with mineral spirits while wearing rubber shop gloves. I don't think it matters what type of lube you use, should you choose to change it. The factory grease is very gummy, which gives the head nice resistance for video. I shoot stills (birds mainly) and find a quicker response with less resistance is preferable.I recommend this product, and I suggest you use it a few times before replacing the grease. It's a fairly simple disassembly, but take note of what goes where. The allen bolts are set pretty tight, but I was able to free them with effort.I don't know how this gimbal compares in weight to others. I'm shooting with a Canon 80D and a Sigma 150-600 mm contemporary. This setup is fairly heavy. When I want to use the gimbal and tripod, I've rigged a shoulder strap with the intention of setting up my camera when I reach the spot where I will shoot. This way I can still shoot freehand if a situation arises. When I intend to walk and shoot, I use a monopod and no gimbal. When I'm using the tripod, I will walk short distances with the camera attached to the gimbal and tripod. The combined weight is definitely a factor, but it's manageable. Everyone has their own tolerance level. I also purchased a 4.75" shoe plate to balance the camera and lens. With a decent tripod (I'm using an Innorel composit), this gimbal provides a very stable platform. If you are a novice photographer, as I am, the very reasonable cost and quality of this piece of equipment makes it more easily justifiable. I would use it 100% of the time from a set position such as a blind or river bank. Even with a heavier camera, it stays in place where you lock it.If you are in the market for a gimbal, I do not think you'll be disappointed with this one.

*edit Aug 3/19 - I gave this a good test run today, and have found it does have the little bit of play when the rotating base is not completely tight, BUT it is a very easy fix with a shim / washer placed in between, there is a youtube video showing how to do this fix.I have a bought several Neewer products over the past year and can say with confidence they have greatly improved on quality. This Neewer Gimbal Head is a very good buy at it's price point, get it on a Lightning deal and it's hard to beat! Only wish Amazon put the CF on sale at the same time, as this aluminium is a bit "weighty" lol, it's not heavy but carbon fibre is a lot lighter and more stable with less vibrations too..I had this set it up completely ready to shoot in about 10 minutes on a Innorel RT90-CF tripod, I have never used or balanced a Gimbal set up before...and the instructions..are non-existent..lol..everything is amazingly easy..common sense goes a long way ;)Mounted my Nikon 200-500 with my D850 and gave this gimbal a quick whirl...So far so good, it holds in position when locked down and has just the right tension to not be 'free wheeling' around, some others have said it was too much tension, I find it just about perfect.I am VERY HAPPY with this purchase and would recommend it to anybody like me on a tight budget..**I WILL UPDATE IF ANY ISSUES ARISE OR IF IT DOESN'T LIVE UP TO WORKING EXPECTATIONS**IMPORTANT:: Make sure to double check all your mounting screws to ensure they are STAYING TIGHT, there have been reports of mounting points becoming loose, not sure if I have an updated version as it seems to not show any of those signs..yet..time will tell :)There are a couple Youtube videos explaining how to fix the couple issues that have been noticed, all are very easily, and are worth the time and purchase. As of my first impression, I would but this again without hesitation, Quality at a budget price...I'm sure the $500+ gimbal heads are "better" in some ways, but I can buy 6 of these at that price point ;)...I'm not a "cheap" shopper (for the most part), I just like to get my moneys worth. :D..ps. this was $68 on a lightning deal

As Curtis mentioned, this gimbal is worthy if you have the guts to tackle it’s construction that is obviously made to NEVER be disassembled. For those who are up to the challenge, and willing to assume the $60 cost as a liability :^), this was worth it for me. For a person like me that has spent their life as one who NEEDS to know how things work and has deconstructed/reconstructed many mechanisms, this one was a fun challenge. One thing to note, this item has no left handed threads. You will need to know this because of the force needed to dislodge some of the parts that are obviously “lock tight” glued. The threaded gimbal guide (as noted in the attached crude illustration) is one part that will need a strong open ended wrench that fits perfectly and a hammer to break it’s lock tight set. Keep the handled threaded pressure driver threaded into the “threaded gimpal guideline” to assure you don’t “ellipse” the threaded opening with the force and leverage needed to dislodge the glued threads. I had to resort to a crescent wrench (not an optimum choice). If using a crescent wrench, re establish the grip alignment and tighten the grip with the thumb screw adjusted before each whack with the hammer. Whack it about one to two inches from the threaded guide and along the crescent wrench (in a counter clockwise direction). The bolt that holds the horizontal gimbal bearing will require a long angled hex wrench short angled portion at the bolt, and long portion to apply turning pressure for best use of leverage, and a soft rubberized strap wrench to hold back-up. Again, this will most likely skin a knuckle or two before it gives up and allows you to loosen it.The horrible “goo” that is mentioned is best physically removed in bulk with disposable, rigid objects. I used popsicle sticks that were cut to having a square edge. Scoop and toss. The “goo” is NOT something you want touching anything you hold dear. When it’s mostly removed (thorough is a big word here), I used a squirt of WD40 on (many) paper towel (s) to remove the small amounts remaining. The machining tolerances of the one I received was excellent. At least in the two pivot bearings. Thus the reason I feel this is a keeper. I used a silicone oil with a Teflon additive as a grease replacement. The fit is so tight in those bearing areas, that grease has too high of a viscosity, and is part of the problem in the original assembly being way too stiff. That high tack goo that was used originally is even worse!I wanted to attach a video of the ease and accuracy of the two corrected pivots. Ease of pinky finger twirling, and absolutely no wobble, but this forum doesn’t allow attaching a video :^(In closing, if you are prone to self inflicted wounds from a hammer; have more money than time and patience, or have problems with cursing inanimate objects, this product may not be right for you. But if you are like me, and enjoy a challenge, have an aptitude for mechanical reverse engineering, and a reasonable collection of tools, solvents, and lubricants; beating this challenge may be for you :^)
