The Nicholson file set is an assortment of 5 files in a variety of shapes that have ergonomic handles and American pattern teeth for non-precision material removal in a range of home or shop uses. Attached rubber-coated handles provide an ergonomic grip. The set comes in a vinyl pouch for storage.
Hand files are used to remove material and smooth and shape workpieces. They have forward-facing cutting teeth and cut when pushed over either a stationary or rotating workpiece. Single-cut teeth are single rows cut diagonally across the width of the file. Double-cut teeth have two sets of rows cut in opposite directions. American pattern files have three coarseness grades. Coarse, also known as bastard cut, is suitable for efficient, heavy material removal where finish is not a concern. Medium, also known as second cut, offers average material removal and finish quality. Fine, also known as smooth cut, provides the smoothest finish. Swiss pattern files have eight coarseness grades, from 00 (coarse), 0 (medium), and 1 to 6 (fine to finest), offering a smoother finish than equivalent American pattern files. For Swiss pattern files the length of the tool is the length of the blade, not counting the tang, which is the pointed end fitted for a handle; for American pattern files the length of the tool is its entire length, including the tang.

These cut non-hardened forged steel like butter. I would have given it 5-Stars but the handle on the 5" file was loose, not a big deal. This is a great set for the price. I went with a $25 chinese set, these are much better than twice the quality...even though they are made in Brazil, its still the Nicholson overall quality.

Got to use these for the first time today. Had to clean up some rectangular openings in a cast aluminum electronics enclosure. The file removed the material at a consistent rate and wasn't overly aggressive nor a slouch. I have a set of small Snap-On files and they work great also. These didn't clog up or show any wear like you'd see on a cheap set. The handle was okay. I didn't use it long enough to tell whether I'd get blisters or not. Seemed fine for the 30 minutes I used them.

These files are a complete disappointment. Save your money and look at other options. I would have expected better quality and finish from a brand name. They are similar to Harbor Freight tools in terms of overall quality.First, don’t expect much from the pouch. It’s only meant for the retail rack and shipping. It won’t last.The files I received all had issues with the handles. I purposely selected files with individual handles, hoping for better retention. The first one I took out of the package, the 6” taper, pulled right out of the handle. Very loose fit. Poor manufacturing. The file shape and cut seems only okay.Pulled the 8” double cut file out, can’t pull the file out of the handle easily. Okay that’s better. Except the file is installed into the handle very crooked.The handles are “ergonomic” contoured and have an oval profile instead of round. So you would think intuitively that the flat of the file would be parallel to the flats of the handle for easy indexing. Nope. Very crooked. I thought at first maybe some poor design choice to have them at an angle like that, but found that the rest of the files all have the same problem BUT the angles are all different.The 10” flat file is the closest to straight but still not correct. I pulled one of the files out of the handle to see if I could fix the problem. No way to fix it. The plastic insert that grips the tang of the file are improperly molded. Poorly designed and manufactured.The cutting edges also leave much to be desired. I included a couple microscopic pictures of the edge of one of the flat files. The narrow edge is far away from flat and would gouge badly any corner you tried to use it on.The 10” flat file is slightly warped.These are so far below the quality level associated with a “brand name” product and a big disappointment. To see that they are actually normally priced over 60 is laughable. I’ll return them and get my 45$ back, but felt that everyone else should be forewarned.

Files look to be adequate for my use. Plastic divider sleeve of better quality would have been a nice way to store them. Unfortunately the storage sleeve was torn when I received it and rendered useless.

Good looking file set. Used on several wood, metal and even plastic projects with good results. Time will tell on the more serious quality of the item.
