Nut and Bolt Thread Checker - Standard and Metric Gauge with 19 Standard & 15 Metric Sizes -- I don’t know what I was expecting but it sure wasn’t this. The photos and ad description do not do this tool justice. It is much larger than I expected. It is a thick metal board with threaded studs and threaded holes. Every gauge I have been able to check with known sized bolts and nuts as been accurate. All of the writing/markings on the board are clear and easy to read. This sizing tool can be laid on the bench, hung on a nail or pegboard, or permanently mounted to the wall. The day I received this, I was working on my truck and dropped a small bolt into the abyss. I gave up looking for it and pulled another bolt that was the same size so I could walk to the parts store. Then I thought I’ll check it in that new gauge and see if I might already have something that will work. Ugh, it was metric sized, which I have almost none of. I dumped my bucket of extra bolts and shortly found a bolt that looks similar in size. Checked it in the new thread checker. Lo and behold it was an exact fit. First day I had it, saved me a lot of time and trouble. This will come in handy a lot.

Satisfied with the quality and assortment of sizes for the money. I thing the storage sponge may have a short life and they may fall out. Time will tell.

My father worked as a machinist for a time. Though he failed 7th grade three times before dropping out of school, he knew his bolt and nut sizes (and how to fix stuff). As an oldest son, I was the obligatory mechanic's assistant on the many projects he tackled. He would say "hand me that 7/16-20 bolt" and I had better know what he was asking for. But my father was an SAE kinda guy and never had to deal with metrics very often. As I tinker with my Tacoma or Outback my knowledge of inch sizes is of little use. The other day I was mounting an old man's step on the bumper of the Tacoma and needed longer bolts. I could have taken my old bolt to NAPA and let them match it up but I really wanted to save 15 cents and buy a couple bolts online. But figuring out the size was a bit of a guess. That was, of course, before I was the semi-proud owner of this handy-dandy set of thread checkers. Now, if I can humble myself and use it, I will know that the bolt I need to order is a 3 inch long M12-1.25, and I won't have to reorder the correct size. This set appears to be made from some sort of an aluminum alloy. Sizes are easy to read on the side of each gauge but even more so on the black foam insert in the storage case. Each gauge also has a hole through it that would allow them to be stored more compactly on a small cable or string.

If you could only have one thread checker this should be one to strongly consider since you can use it to check threads that are on nuts and bolts you can hold in your hand and bring to it OR bring the individual thread checker standards to the car or other difficultly accessible location.I have already reviewed three excellent one-piece thread checkers (for Amazon) and they are very very convenient to use until they are not; that is you can't get them near the stud or tapped/threaded hole you want to measure. This product solves that access problem but although these come in a very nice black plastic snap open box packed with foam so they don't rattle, each in its own labeled snugly fitted labeled hole, they still can be dropped or lost. And being made of aluminum you can't just pick them back up with a magnet. And if you lose one can you replace it?Individual pieces are clearly labeled on the side in engraved white letters and numbers against either a blue (standard/SAE) or red (metric) background. Each of them has two through holes (about 0.1 inch/2.5 mm diameter) at the bottom of the female threaded area so you could string them all together on a wire or strong cord or just give each individual one a security loop.Since the case they come in has no logo or markings showing which side is up I added a "This Side Up" lettered black on yellow tape to the top side and a corresponding "This Side Down" to the bottom side so that I won't accidentally open it wrong side up and have the contents fall out.Although it's a very beautiful set of tools you can't just leave it open on your coffee table as a conversation piece like you can a one–piece thread checker. In conclusion: buy one, or similar competitor at a lower price point (Amazon) , for yourself if you don't have any thread checker or as a complement to the one-piece thread checker you have. And buy a couple more for your brothers or buds. Or, if you are a lady, for yourself or for a man in your life.

Because they are aluminum, you need to be pretty gentle with them. Some of them were also cut pretty ruff. Decent for the price though.

I inherited a mini hardware store, wanted for checking threads. Found most of the pieces in the kit were either cross-threaded or had chips or burrs. Poor quality, RETURNED
