I love the colors and the protective container they come in to protect the pastels. I use these primarily for background colors when using colored pencils.

Not sure why six of seven pastels don’t have lids, but that’s what the photo shows.

I tried stick pastels years ago, and did not enjoy the experience at all. Even though to me, soft pastel paintings have always looked more real to me than oils. But my earlier experience left me wishing but discouraged. I'd seen the new pan pastels, and watched videos on them, but they're not cheap initially. But I decided to give it one more try, mainly because I think the tools that are now used, might help a novice. I was not prepared for the absolutely beautiful pigments and how easily they blended together. I'm a fan! I bought this set because it's a basic set of colors, so mixing colors were very easy if you have a basic knowledge of color theory. I am definitely buying more in the near future!

I love pan pastels. My biggest reason for writing another review was more for the company that it was purchased from through Amazon. They are fabulous. Right from the beginning they kept me informed about my package and where it was/wasn’t, gave me the option almost immediately to reorder or wait and very apologetic. Great service! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟!

These are wonderful! They blend beautifully! I use them often as backgrounds for watercolor or gouache paintings. They are pricey but seem to go a long ways.

Love PanPastels. Lovely to work with. You'll want all of the colors and their tints and their shades. But, I'm frustrated by the way they chose to package and market the various colors.I decided to purchase the sets that come with a plastic pallet that holds 10 pans. The size of the pallet (8" X 11") is just right and the number colors is perfect. One really needs to keep the pans in a protective pallet because an impact, such as dropping one on the floor, will shatter the cake and powder will fly if the lid is not on. Also, the colors that are shipped in the pallets have all arrived intact (in cake form). The set that came with the colors screwed together had damage to 2 of the cakes which means they are in powder form. Only one screw-on lid is included in each set. However, you don't need it because the pallets have their own lid which covers all of the colors. You don't have to waste time unscrewing lids off of each color or frustrating yourself screwing and unscrewing them from each other. Screw that! The pallets can be purchased separately for upwards of $10, so I figured it would be a better deal to buy the sets that came with the plastic pallets. They actually come with anywhere from 6 to 10 colors. So, you have room to add more. Put all of your greens together or arrange as you prefer. Another plus is that they come with tools and sponges. My gripe is that after purchasing 5 different sets with pallets and one 5 color set (that came all screwed together in a stack), I now have 7 extra duplicate colors plus 3 more colors in triplicate (red, white, and black). So, I'm wishing that I had just invested in the big set with all of the colors and then bought the additional pallets. The good thing is that with the duplicates removed, I have room for 20 more colors. The problem is that nearly every other set out there seems to have at least one duplicate. And, I'm afraid to buy anymore of the stacked sets because, as others have complained, they are not packing them properly for shipment. I am using the individual lids on the shattered pans and the pallet lid still fits over the top.Purchasing these sets on Amazon could be made easier by clearly stating the names and numbers of the colors included in each set.
