Product Description

Park Tool MLP-1.2 masterlink pliers in use

Park Tool MLP-1.2 Bicycle Chain Master Link Pliers

Many modern derailleur chains use a “master link" (also known as a "quick link" or "power link") that allows the chain to be installed and removed without driving out a rivet. MLP-1.2 Master Link Pliers make removal and replacement of these master links quick and effortless. Simply insert the specially sized jaws into the master link. Then squeeze the handles to open or pull the handles to close the link. Compatible with 5-to-12-speed derailleur chains that use a master link, including SRAM AXS and Shimano XTR 12-speed.

NOTE: The MLP-1.2 will not remove or install the style of master links with both pins attached to one plate and a side plate or spring clip that clips onto the pins. These are commonly found on older drivetrain systems or single speed bicycles. To remove these types of master links, use a needlenose pliers such as the Park Tool NP-6.

These seemed a bit of a luxury to me when I bought them but I am glad I did. You can manage quick links without, but it is just so much easier with the proper tool. Highly recommended.

I thought it was silly to get a very task specific tool like this, but it costs less than a cheap chain so I tried it. I love it. It is *sooo* much easier to break open an SRAM powerlink with this. It also helps during relinking as you can rest each end on the tool to align them. You don't _need_ this tool to seat the pins in a powerlink, but it works well. You can just use pressure on your pedals for that.

There are some tools that are so simple yet so effective for what they are made for...these Master Link Pliers are such a tool. I didn't really know how effective and simple it would be to use until I bought and tried it. I especially like using them when I have to take my bike chain off and put a newly rewaxed chain back on. This makes the job quicker and less messy with minimal handling of links. They are even more effective on dirtier chains in that you handle the chain less and get hands less messy and dirty with old chain lube.

This tool is nicely done. Looks and feels solid, making my task when working on my bike chain a quick one. The only thing I don't like that Park Tool has done on this tool is that it's only good for un-hooking the chain links. One has to buy another tool to do the reverse (i.e. locking the links in place). But a cyclist whose experienced in bike maintenance already knows this other tool isn't needed. Just use the pedals to lock those links in place and work's done. Does the simple task it was made for easily, and it should be. Must-have for any bike DIYers.

What I really hated from those links, is that they seemed very easy to open, however, many times I rather used a chain tool to break the chain instead of trying to open that thing. With this plies it takes 1 sec to pop the link!.It's a simple tool, don't expect to see a heavy tool steel plier, but does its job and it's affordable, more over if you use to service your bycles, and by being relatively light and flat, you can stow them on your suv/car to make a quick fix just before hitting the trail.

This is a great tool but it has been improved. The new version not only removes the link but also helps install new ones that are a little on the stiff side and won't snap together by hand. It's not a big deal as you can snap them together by using the cranks against the brakes, but since the new tool is usually listed for the same price as this one here you might as well get the newer version for the same money.Search for "Park Tool MLP-1.2"---Sometimes those "missing link" master links are a real PITA to get apart and the only easy way to do it is with this tool. If you own even one bike with such a master link and ever want to change or take off your chain to clean or replace it this tool is worth its weight in gold.Sometimes you don't need it and you can just grab the chain with a hand on each side of the master link and force them together so the link just POPS apart. Maybe about half the time it isn't that simple or easy because grunge and grit have locked it up and it just wont budge. Nothing else works like this tool because it is MADE to pop the two halves of a "missing link" master link together and unsnap them so they can come apart.Without this tool you will FIGHT & FIGHT & FIGHT with the master link parts. I've tried other pliers like needle-nose, snap-ring, and a bunch of other specialized tools I've got in my well-stocked tool box and nothing really works like this tool. Nothing even comes close and I've got two drawers full of pliers for all sorts of specialty jobs.Just buy it. You need this if you work on bike chains. That's the gist of it. Just BUY one. You will thank yourself.

The title says it all. Sometimes master links separate beautifully, often they don't. In seems like every manufacturer feels different, and this tool works wonderfully with all of them. They are a little tight at first, but like most tools they break in. I dig that the grip on the handle is good quality. It always helps when covered in grease and grime while working on my bikes. The metal feels high quality, and I honestly cannot find a reason that these wouldn't last 30 years. If you rotate chains, or have OCD and remove your chain to clean it often, owning this tool is a must. I promise it will improve your quality of life, and at the very least your blood pressure. Nothing in this world irritates me more than a stuck master link or not having the right tool for the job!

This is a single purpose tool and bring from Park Tools, is of the same high quality as their other tools. I used it on several SRAM, and a wipperman chain with no trouble at all. I'm a commuter and I'm hard on chains, so when I go to open these master links, I needed a tool like this to get them off the bike. Before I bought this, I was using shop pin tool to just open the chain up. But of course you can't reuse the chain if you do that.So highly recommended for the home and shop bicycle mechanic.

I just switched to SRAM Powerlinks last year after having several chains break using the Shimano HG replacement pins on XTR chains. I like the master links much better and the fact that you generally don't need a tool to remove the chain is a big plus. That said, sometimes it can be difficult to open the master link when it's been used a while and/or grit and grime work their way in. I've successfully used needle nosed pliers to make it much easier but sometimes they slip and I've always been concerned about potential damage to the rollers. These pliers are made for this specific job and work great. They are well made so they should last for as long as I'm able to ride so I think they are well worth the money. Like one reviewer already stated, if you're using SRAM Powerlinks, be sure to squeeze on the sides of the link to prevent damage as per instructions from both SRAM and Park.
