Bought this for an exam and they worked out great. They don't break easily and the different scales help give texture and gradient to compotsitions.

I expected to be able to unravel the pencils without the burden of using a sharpener and to be left with regular charcoal pencils. However, the way that the pencils are constructed , once you unravel you are left with a long section of charcoal , not a sharp point. I am very disappointed. If I wanted sticks of charcoal instead of charcoal pencils, then that's what I would have ordered.

These were reccomended by an artist, and I was a little skeptical on me liking the pencil charcoal. I'm glad I purchased them because they are better than the charcoal sticks! In my opinion they're just less messier and easier to sharpen. But everyone is different, I recommend these!

Such a great idea! If only implemented properly...As another tried to warn me, the paper makes these very difficult to use. The perforations are far too light/faint to be able to peal away in any kind of consistent manner. So there is no easy way to get to a consistent reveal of more charcoal. Then, when you have finally gotten it to work, too much is reveals, making the longish bare charcoal now very vulnerable to breakage due to sharpening.And when trying to sharpen, at least the soft (the one I'm most interested in) breaks off. I tried my expensive sharpener, I tried a blade, and I tried my sandpaper. Each one would break the charcoal off requiring more frustrating pealing.And another break, and another peal, and another break, and finally, with small stump in hand, I decided to write a review! Best part of the purchase....It's a great idea, and perhaps someone will do it right one day, but they didn't, so I'm tossing mine.

After struggling with understanding how to apply charcoal correctly for a long time, hating the mess, and the horrible noise it makes.. these pencils have helped take out a lot of the prior frustration I had with this medium and has transformed me into a better artist. Now I can confidently apply charcoal

Like with most General's supplies its only flaw is one of sensation. They just don't go down very smoothly. But the products are always rich strong and effective. These are no exception and they remove the hassle of sharpening your charcoal pencil. Even the strongest charcoal is too brittle for most sharpeners.The bonus kneaded eraser is of course exellent! To be expected from this brand. Great quality at a great price. These guys never dissapoint.
