So imagine buying a 15-20 lb propane cylinder without an empty one to exchange, paying that extra $40 or so, then just tossing the tank when it was empty. Seems ridiculous, right? That's exactly what you're doing with the 1lb "non-refillable" cylinders. They just make them small enough to keep you from noticing the extra cost. In our current world of recycling, upcycling, reduce, reuse, etc, I'm appalled that these disposable cylinders as we know them even still exist. They are an insult to consumers' intelligence. Now I'll get off the soapbox and say this is about the classiest apparatus you can get for refilling small cylinders at home. It has its own shut-off valve, a handy gauge, and the brass construction is excellent. Do a little online research, watch a few videos, and you're ready to refill. Never find yourself out of luck with your propane torch or camp stove again, as long as you have a refillable propane cylinder tucked away under your grill or attached to your shop heater or wherever. Same stuff, different bottle. Use good judgement, know when there is a problem, keep yourself safe, and save a few bucks on buying "disposable" propane cylinders.

I haven't used it yet, but it looks well-made and should be simple to use.

This adapter works very well. I was looking for something that comes with a valve that is in-line with the adapter so I could easily turn it on and off as opposed to using the valve on the tank. It comes with a gauge which I am unsure about. Anywhere there is liquid propane, there is going to be pressure. The same pressure exists regardless of the quantity of propane. It is not going to tell you the 1 lb tanks is full. Also, you must know that you will never "fill" to capacity a 1 lb cylinder without some sort of pump in place. There are some tricks to achieve that however there are risks to doing so. Overfilling can cause leaking around the pressure relief when the tank warms, the pressure relief can leak if you pull on the pin in an attempt to "completely" fill the tank, and the connecting port can leak after filling. These are risk you should be aware of if you are going to use a device like this to refill your tanks. I have experienced each of these and understand the properties of propane. As long as you understand the risks of refilling as well as the limitations of the "gauge", this refill adapter works very well and is one of the better options for refilling these tanks. Another option is to purchase the "refillable" tanks which are made for this purpose.

Just used this today to refill my 1 lb propane tank from a 20 lb tank. I had just gotten the larger tank filled yesterday, and my 1lb tank was getting low. In case someone doesn't know the proper way to refill a tank, here are a couple things to keep in mind.First of all, the larger tank you're filling from must be upside down. You want to transfer liquid propane, not gas. If your large tank is right side up, the only thing that will come out is the gas vapor.Second, it works best if the small tank is much colder than the large tank. I had both tanks outside in freezing temps and not much transferred the first time I tried. So I put the small tank in the freezer (which is colder than the outside freezing temps), and I put the large tank in a warm room. Once the large tank warmed up a bit, I tried the transfer again and it worked much better. I could hear the propane moving from the large tank to the small one. After refilling it, I weighed the tank and compared it to an identical new tank and it was only a couple ounces less than the new one. If I would have warmed up the large tank even more, it would have probably completely filled it up. But it was still cool to the touch. I hadn't left it in the warm room long enough for it to actually come to room temperature. It's nice that this has a shut off valve so you're not just dependent on the large tanks valve to start and stop the flow. It's much quicker to turn this 1/4 turn valve than the multiple turns it takes on the larger tank valve. It's also nice that this comes with a cap for the small tank. I keep my torch on the tank (it's what I use to burn trash), so I don't need it for this tank, but when I use the new tank I have and have 2 filled, I'll have use for the cap. It can help seal a tank that may have a small leak out the top of the tank.Overall, this is a really nice refill adapter, and I wouldn't hesitate to get another one if needed.

I’ve been refilling one pound tanks for over a decade. The first adapters were (and some still are) just a brass fitting with the appropriate threading on each end. They worked but I never have felt comfortable with the smaller tank sticking out horizontally and unsupported from the big tank, not to mention the gas loss when unthreading. Adapters that added a hose help with orientation of the small tank if used with a 20lb tank, but are too short if used with my preferred 30 lb tank (from which one can obtain a more complete fill when filling multiple tanks). Most adapters with a hose included a shut off valve, which greatly added to the convenience when filling multiple tanks. Now this (and a dozen other very similar clones) has come along and offers my dream list of features: brass components; 90 degree angle to vertically orient the one pound tanks; an integral fast action valve to start and stop the gas flow, relatively short tubing that minimizes gas loss between tanks, and a gauge that while not super accurate does give a relative indicator of gas pressure. While the machining could be more precise, and the components more polished, I find them adequate and the overall package now my preferred means to fill the small tanks. If you haven’t done this before do seek out some explanation of the process. There is more to successful refilling than this or any other apparatus, but full instruction cannot be accomplished in a review.
