Beware of buying this item, it is most disappointing. I have had this item just over a month and one thing positive I can say is it consistently fails on every trip I have used it on. You put an address in , it begins the trip and has no issues getting you to the general area, then the last 10 miles when you really need the assistance in locating the address , the screen blacks out and a small white screen pops up saying basically it can no longer navigate and just freezes up. This is when I have to switch to my phone for the rest of the trip. then after I get to the address I'm searching for, I push enough buttons a screen pops up and ask if I want to continue the previous trip. Every trip this happens, I was gone for a month so when I got back home it is now too late to return this defective item. I have an issue in the past with Rand Mcnally GPS, when you send it back for replacement, they send you a refurbished item. I didn't buy and pay for a refurbished unit, I paid for a new unit. Oddly enough I have never had an issue with a Rand Mcnally road atlas and I have bought over fifty of those items in my 46 year driving career. Perhaps they should stick with what they know.

I have had two TND550’s and one TND450. All three have been problematic. They seem to last one to three years before they’re too worn out. For example, developing shorts preventing charging/powering the unit. All three experienced failed updates which corrupted the software, requiring factory resets. All three experienced “successful” updates, which deleted all location bookmarks programmed by the user. Two experienced updates which disabled the ability to export bookmarks, preventing the user from backing up all locations programmed into the unit, therefore causing the user to lose all of that data the next time the unit fails, is replaced, or is updated. The route planning within cities is frequently terrible, absolutely terrible. Rand McNally’s maps aren’t kept up to date very well, and so the GPS doesn’t know about many streets, truck stops, and long-term construction zones, and won’t find out about them for years sometimes, if ever. Rand McNally’s Tech Support is useless. Each time I’ve emailed them with a detailed description of the problem, they replied several days later telling me only to call them, then closed the support ticket, marking the issue “resolved.” When calling, I’d be on hold until I gave up waiting for someone to answer. For the TND550, when adding a location bookmark by coordinates, the saved location name includes those coordinates in parentheses after the title I gave the location. Not a big deal exactly, but it is annoying, clutters up my bookmarks list, and it’s especially annoying because the TND450 didn’t do that, so the “new and improved” TND550 is worse in that way. I also feel the routing is worse on the TND550 than it was on the older TND450 model. The maximum volume of the TND550 is also less than the TND450, and is wholly inadequate for a big truck GPS. It’s a shame Rand McNally couldn’t be bothered to employ testing, quality control nor competent tech support. Both the TND 450 and TND 550 have a lot of potential as a GPS product, but both are flawed and both were poorly executed.

Overall good gps for drivers who already are feeling comfortable driving a commercial vehicle. If you are a beginner i would buy something bigger, because the buttons on the screen can get really tine to adjust something while you’re driving. Also, touch screen could be more responsive, but i guess it is no “ipad” from Apple Inc.
