I am sure I am not the only one to buy this product without realizing that it's only useful for one thing - e.g. sending GPS data to an older VHF radio that only supports NMEA0183. Raymarine is clear enough in their description of what it's for but doesn't go into any detail about the converter only being one way and only supporting a handful of NMEA0183 message types. Online vendors ofter omit much detail at all in their descriptions leading some to think that this might be usable as a general purpose converter, which it is not.

This kit worked perfectly to link my older NMEA 0813 VHF to my Raymarine NMEA 2000 backbone (Raymaine calls it seatalkNG). It allows GPS data to be shared with the VHF for DSC emergency functions. You need to take care to match the tiny wires from the VHF to the kit, the colors do not necessarily match so check your manuals. The added ports for NMEA 2000 drop cables and included wires and terminal caps are nice to have, but may not be needed if you are adding this to an existing network.One big issue is it does not allow recieved distress signals to be sent to the network for display on a chart plotter. This would allow you to locate a boat in distress to render aid or coordinate with the Coast Guard. Even my old Raymarine equipment has this capability. Why Rayamarine chose not include the two addtional wires in the VHF drop cable it would need to make this work is hard to understand, especially since it is a safety function.

I have the part to the Techincian to install there was some difficulties at first but what ever it was it was sorted & works as it should

This is a very complete kit that likely includes far more than you need for an existing system. But if you are building an all new STNG bus and retaining some VHF radios that still need GPS data via the older NMEA 0183 low speed scheme, this is exactly what you need to help build out the STNG bus and provide for the older equipment at the same time. In fact, you can save some money if you start with this kit and then buy just the Tee's, backbone and drop cables that you need to connect all of the newer STNG bus devices. I even used this device to connect an older NMEA0183 VHF and a new NMEA2000 (STNG equivalent) VHF so that both had VHF and this one adapter provided both needs. The two termination loads provided with this kit save you from buying them when building a new STNG / NMEA0183 bus system.NMEA0183 cable is "OUT" only and provides data to older NMEA0183 "listeners" that use various navigation, attitude or environmental data, Just two wires to connect for NMEA0183 so it is simple to do.

In order to use DSC emergency button on my VHF radio, it needed time, lat and long from a GPS. This converter kit made it easy to plug into the Seatalk(ng) network to get that info.Kudos to Amazon Customer Service for quickly replacing the damaged first delivery. That bag was found torn open with the backbone terminations missing. But they replaced it in a couple days!

Item worked well the installation instructions are not great and may not apply to your specific radio and they don't tell what to do with all of the wires. Their customer service is only open during normal business hrs so you won't get weekend help from them.
