I've had two Break Aways. Each was my primary bike for a couple of years, so I've done many miles. And I'm 200+ pounds and a masher. So my experience may be extreme.Anyway, what happens is that over time the clamping coupler needs to be re-torqued as the clamp get looser. The ends of the clamp get a little closer to each other. Eventually, they touch and obviously you have a problem. I have tried filing down the ends of the clamp to restore the gap and full clamping tension again. But after doing this, I can still feel the tubes move in the clamp as I apply torque by standing on one of the pedals. The riding is experience is not great either at this point, especially on bumpy descents. Sprinting is out of the question as the rear end moves around alarmingly.So what happens? Ritchey says the clamp stretches, but I don't think so. Otherwise the filing trick would fix the problem. What I think happens is that the relatively hard tube flanges work space into the V-shaped interior surface of the softer ferrous clamp. So the surface become more like a U than a V, and things can move.Fortunately, the flanges seems to hold up well and a new clamp puts things right again. It's money well spent. In fact, even if you still have a gap in the clamp ends, test for flex and replace the clamp if you can sense any movement.By the way, the clamp itself gets only gets 3 stars because it needs be replaced every so often. But maybe this is better than what might happen if the clamp were made of something harder (like damage to the flanges of the frame tubes).
