I’m guessing at this review. I’m new and received these as a Christmas gift from my daughter. I’m a beginner on wood lathes so I can’t say anything other than you don’t have to be experienced to tell the difference between these and a set I paid $100 for. These are beautiful and well made. I’m sure they will live up to their reputation. I watched some YouTube videos and not one bad comment made about these tools. I hope this helps someone especially newbies. You get what you paid for. If you’ve invested in a lathe for crying out loud why would you buy so called beginner tools, then buy better ones later? Just wait a while save up and get these and don’t look back. You won’t need to upgrade.

Buy once, cry once I was told so decided for my first set of lathe chisels to go with the highly rated Sorby HSS line. They were sharp strait from the factory and cut well or so I thought. I have a new kodiak sharpening system so anxious to try it out I decided to do some light touch up on a few of the Sorby bowl gouges. My word, what a difference it made. Went from sharp to scary sharp. Just a light pass on the kodiak and I now get beautiful delicate light shavings and chips with little or no chatter. Well worth the money.

They look great and have nice balance to them. I thought they were going to be a little bigger but they work fine. Only used the skew so far without sharpening yet but it cuts beautifully well! They come ground to the general shape and require sharpening just like any other chisel. The down side is that the box for the chisels was just thrown into an outer box with no padding. This caused all of the 8 chisels originally held in place by cardboard tabs to roll around the box and the tips of some of the chisels got dinged....nothing sharpening won't remove but hey, I just payed $300! They should have been packed better for something new.If it helps anyone the skew is rectangular with the rounded edges as advertised in the Sorby catalog.

I purchased a used lathe and used tools and tried to learn to turn bowls. After months of frustration I purchased this set of Sorby turning chisels and a slow speed grinder with the Wolverine jig. I bought a new Nova 14-42 lathe as well. Now every minute away from the lathe finds me wanting to be standing there making woodchips. These tools are great quality and fun to use, and this set has just about every tool you need to get started. Recommend, recommend, recommend!

I bought these as my starter kit intro to wood turning. I don't mind spending more $$$ for higher quality so I feel like these were a good bargain for me. Nice weight, good size, I think very good for a beginner and would be appreciated by intermediate and maybe even pro turners. I will need to buy additional chisels as I learn about new grinds and so forth, Robert Sorby chisels will remain high on my preference list.

I was a little leary of ordering these online due to other reviews of bad packaging from another supplier. To my pleasant surprise my tools arrived in excellent condition. I have turned half a dozen pens, a bowl and two pepper grinders and they are still sharp. I'm looking to get the texturing and spiraling tool system next.10-30-13 update, haven't been turning anything for a while. Tools finally got dull and I hadn't decided on a sharpening system. Well I finally broke down and ordered a T-7. Wow. I had thought the Sorby tools were pretty sharp when I got them new. Well, heh, now after a few minutes on the T-7 I know what sharp really is. Can't wait to start more turning projects!.
