Installed this on my tw200, seems to work fine, very helpful to know the rpm’s of the motor

Purchased 2 of this product to monitor engine hours for proper maintenance on a pair of compact Champion inverter generators. Their no nonsense physical installation simply requires wrapping the wire around the spark plug wire and affixing the unit to the inside of the generator with the 2-way tape/Velcro provided. The units do accurately keep track of running engine time. So to this end, they do the job I bought them for. The chronometer activates automatically when it senses the engine is running and the chronometer stops automatically when the engine is shut down. But the LED display remains illuminated regardless, so the 2-button press-hold-release has to be used every time you want the display to turn off to conserve battery life. As I installed each unit inside the generator case, access requires removing 4 cover screws to turn off the display; a bit of a pain to do every time. So it would be an improvement if the screen shutting off feature could be retained in the settings to activate automatically shortly after the engine is shut off and not have to do it manually every time. So that's the good and my take on an improvement recommendation.... The bad is much what others have commented on regarding the complex instructions, written on a tiny piece of paper. Read it all 4 times over and you just might just get lucky and understand half of it! The menu features on the display and the flashing icons on the display are not intuitive at all. If you lose the instructions you will likely not be able to do anything on your own with navigating the settings menu or product features. I never got the unit to display the engine RPM after several attempts. But as long as the automatic hour meter worked, that was all I really need it for. I never attempted to configure the settings for maintenance programming & prompts, I'll just keep track of my hours in a separate log. So, the unit works but could be improved. The features and instructions are complex. But for the purpose I need it for, it works.

Product arrived with a dead battery. Luckily I had a spare. Would have returned it otherwise. Haven't done a full test as I need to take the boat on the water to do this. Seems to work when idling. It doesn't seem as waterproof as the specifications note, plus other reviews seem to indicate this is lacking. The instructions also indicate water resistance vs waterproof. I am using in an exposed marine environment so have installed the unit in a clear waterproof case. Runleader have a good website with all the manuals available which is why I purchased as I could check if it had a setting for 3 cyclinder 4 stroke engines, other brands don't have the setting.UPDATE: Have done a test with the unit on the water and works well with my 3 cylinder 4 stroke, reading RPM as expected. Easy to install, only single wire to wrap around a spark plug lead.

Super easy to install makes tracking for service a breeze. I had little trouble figuring out how to set it up but eventually got the hang of it

Purchased 2 of these, one for a log splitter, the other for a wood chipper, mainly to keep track of oil change times as neither machine ( 34 ton splitter, 6 1/2 inch chipper ) use oil filters though both are commercial size stuff. Run leader is easy to install, has many features I will not use, and is a real pain to program. I set it for total engine hours, and then a sub window that gives me a count down so every 20 hours I know to change the oil. Works great, lots of vibration on both machines, working in the rain, so far no hickups and I just finished my 2nch oil change on both machines, headed for the 3rd. So after 40 hours on both tachs in hard conditions they are still going strong.

We recently purchased a Honda EM6500SX generator to use when we lose power. The Honda generator has an app, but it doesn't track the hours used very well. I spent quite a bit of time researching various options for Hour Meters and finally chose this one. Positives: Easy to install, has a replaceable battery, can set hour meter to start on the number of hours you want, tachometer seems to track rpms accurately if you figure out how many times to wrap the hour meter wire around the spark plug wire. The only drawbacks are that the buttons are small and you will want to have the manual available if you want to use Meter for any of its advanced functions. I would also prefer that it is made in the U.S. All in all, this was a great purchase.

This is a nice, well built unit with lots of information for a very reasonable price. Although I will unlikely use all of the features, it is nice to know they are available should I decide to. I had an issue where the RPM display at full throttle of my Craftsman 26hp Kohler tractor was bouncing around from approximately 3169 to 6000 (max rpm setting). I had the meter set at an rpm range of 0 to 6000. The problem was intermittent but was fairly repeatable when throttling up and throttling down. I originally had 5 coils on the ignition cable, right next to the spark plug rubber boot. I moved the "coil" of wire about an inch and a half from the plug boot and changed how many coils I had from 5 to 4 to 3 to 6. At 6 coils, 1-1/2 inches away from the plug boot the problem resolved at all throttle levels. It is also awesome to know how many run time hours are on the engine as well as how many starts it has seen. I mounted this unit to the dash after replace the head gaskets after 15 years of hard use on this tractor. I will set up service intervals and max rpm (alert) settings now that the rpm issue is resolved. I am very happy with his unit - and thanks to all who helped answering my question.

I bought this particular Runleader Hour meter after researching many similar products. I chose this one because of all the features, IP67 Submersible rating, and because it's not a "one time use completely sealed" product. You can change batteries and continue to use it. You do NOT lose your stored information (hours, RPM's, maintenance settings, etc...) upon changing the battery. Battery life is about 2 year's if you have the display set to on continuously. But a great feature of this product is that you can press the "menu" and "set" buttons and the display will turn off. It will come back on automatically if you start your machine or press any button. This extends battery life many more year's. It all depends upon how much use the equipment gets. It uses a thicker battery than the normal "CR2032 or CR2025" battery types. Instead, it takes the longer lasting CR2450.I installed this on my new Ariens Pro 28" RapidTrak snowblower. It is a quality product, does not feel or look "cheap" at all. It's easy to mount and comes with your choice of mounting hardware, either velcro or studs, nuts, and washers. I mounted mine using the studs, nuts, and washers. The wire lead is 5 feet long and easy to use. Just wrap a few loops of it around your engines spark plug and it will read RPM's and hours (based on tenths). It also displays a clock, 24 hour military time. You can set up maintenance alarms based on hours used for changing oil, spark plugs, or any additional maintenance you want. It's got 2 maintenance alarms so you can set up two different alarms if you so desire. It also has RPM alarms which you can set up. The backlit display is a bright green (as in the picture), but turns bright red for your maintenance / RPM alarms. The meter requires a few settings you need to do initially for your particular machine in order to get the correct information / RPM's displayed. You must set up the correct firing order or sequence from 2 stroke/1 cylinder all the way to 4 stroke/16 cylinder. You also must set up the RPM range, of which there's four choices, ranging from 0 - 6000 RPM's, all the way up to 25,000 RPM's. I initially had a setting wrong, setting up my snowblower to what I thought was the correct setting of "4 stroke / 1 cylinder". However, my RPM's were way off. Upon reading a small note in the instructions whereby it advises you "that some 4 stroke / 1 cylinder engine's will require a setting of 2 stroke / 1 cylinder // 4 stroke / 2 cylinders", I changed the setting to this and the meter was spot on, reading RPM's perfectly. If you set up the wrong settings for your engine, it's not going to be accurate.It's very easy to go thru the settings and make changes as necessary. It's not complicated at all and the instructions are excellent, albeit the writing is quite small.Runleader offers a lot of various hour/RPM meters and many look almost the same. There's slight differences between them, including water resistant ratings. This meter offers you 3 - different button colors, red, black, or blue, and comes with the IP67 submersible rating so it can withstand rain, snow, and ice without any issues. I'm extremely satisfied with this meter and highly recommend it. Just take the time to initially set it up, and it will work awesome. Only takes a few minutes.
