The main unit is functional but you have to give it time and don't expect miracles. The software can be buggy at times. Definitely not something you are going to take out of the box and start using right away, if even the same day. The secondary unit that is made for handheld use with a cell phone is basically unusable in my opinion. Granted I don't have the newest high end "premium" cell phone like the top of the line iphone, galaxy, etc but I do have a current model motorola edge which has reasonable processing power. Trying to take something as finicky as 3d scanning and then try to make it handheld and dependent upon using a camera phone is just pointless and a waste of potential resources that could be better utilized. It is safe to say that anyone who needs to do 3d scanning in the field will likely have a laptop with them which means you could make use of extremely more powerful processing power and storage capabilities. I am no 3d expert by any means nor do I am even claim to be be highly knowledgeable from a hobby perspective but I am a network engineer by trade for the past 20 years so I feel comfortable with the fact that I can grasp the technology. I have purposely held off for over 6 months to write this review in case I was missing something or an update was in the works as I have been a beta tester for many technology manufacturers so I know how a first generation product can have major software changes once the real world shows how they use a device compared to a sterile lab environment which can lead to tunnel vision in design and programming. Luckily for me it works well enough for me to play with basic scanning but if you are thinking you can scan a small object and recreate in a 3d printer you are going to be greatly disappointed.

I purchased this in March of '24. The initial setup took about 1/2 a day and was very buggy. In the latest update, 3dMaker updated the processes of connecting the scanner to your phone. You must re-register the product and send them a photo of your serial number and Amazon order. From there, you get a cryptic message saying it may take up to 48 hours for someone to review your submission. This is the process for scanning through your iPhone!Avoid this product like the plague.

I consider myself a tech savvy person but for almost $1k this should have very detailed instructions. You get a few papers with how to connect it but nothing explaining you need to go to their site to download app for phone and app for PC. Could never get phone to connect to hand held scanner setup. My phone should have handled it fine it just wanted to have a QR code to scan and I tried everything. Nothing worked. Big down fall of such a major device. You shouldn't have to search everything to try to figure it out. Again detailed instructions would have solved this. Couldn't ever get a decent scan from the turn table setup with tripod mount for scanner. Tried several angles and just got spotty bits of my item. Really hoping to save time in design with so.e stuff but back to CAD. All the hype with this device and I felt like it was way more work to trying to figure it out than a quick plug and play. No idea why the version on my PC kept crashing in the middle of scanning. I'm running a 2060 Nvidia graphic card with newest drivers and 32 gigs of ddr4 along with AMD ryzen 9. Never have issues on any 3d design software/cad. Not sure the issue but not worth this amount of money.

This is the third 3D scanner I've tested. For detail, it was the best of the bunch. For ease of use, I have to say it's second place. The installation went well, though it took some time and was more tedious than the other two. Trust me when I say that if the scanner won't work, it is user error. The first thing you should check is that you have camera permissions turned on. That was my fatal error and it kept the scanner from being recognized until I figured it out. Second, you must be willing to learn the software and put in the work. No scanner will turn out a ready-to-print file without you putting in the work. You can do a lot with the software and you can import the file into other software like Fusion in order to spruce it up. What I can say is that it produced an STL file that was nearly perfect. There was a little noise I had to filter out and a few tiny mesh repairs to be made. Overall, for the first time out of the box, it produced an acceptable file. My first scan was a tape measure and it reproduced it faithfully, with the exception of the writing on the label. Everything has its limits. I will say that this unit required a good deal more light than the others but it was great at filtering out background items. All in all, I love this scanner and if you're willing to put in the work, you can get some truly great scans. Fair warning, though: If you use it hand-held and scan really large objects like, say, your Great Dane, it will eat up a ton of memory and take a long time to process. I have a maxed out laptop with 2T of storage and a ton of memory, but when I went to scan my Christmas tree, it crashed from lack of memory. Lesson learned. But if you have the right setup, you can get some truly amazing results from this thing. And I love that you have options for the way it scans: Handheld, tripod, phone, computer, etc. I would recommend this to a friend.
