From the Manufacturer

For those that wish to build their own workbench vise or create their own press clamps, this hard-to-find Shop Fox D3258 bench screw (1-inch by 20-inch) features a 12-inch sliding handle and cast iron screw mount. Cross threaded screw speeds up opening/closing, plus increases gripping strength.

Bench screw - solid with a strong nut - nice length for long travel or use through thicker applications. I would rate it 4.5 out of 5 The flanges that hold the screw to your chop, (or other object you choose to move), are of a diameter that is to small. This created two problems: #1 hold down screws would bind/rub hub of screw. #2 with an acquit diameter hole for the screw, the hold down screws position ended up less then 1/8th inch from edge of hole. I tried 4 different types of screws, small and big, and all failed. I tried mounting flanges 3 ways - all failed. I made custom flanges, ( much larger diameter), and that solved the issue. This screw is 8 turns per inch - strong pull, but a little slow to make large changes. For the price the value is there - you just might have to tweak it a bit

Mine included a collar for where it mounts to the chop of the vise, so the product was actually better than in the photo. I used it to make a big leg vise for a woodworking bench, it's the perfect product for that. This was cheaper than the Yost tools version, and I didn't have to make my own handle.

Great product with one small issue. This screw is very large and works well for a leg vise. My package did come with a collar, and this leads me to the only issue with this bench screw. The collar is so tigot that you will want to sand the paint off for it to work properly. Also, the screw holes are positioned too close to the center to use a #2 wood screw without grinding the head of the screw to a smaller diameter. I expected to make my own collar, so this was a minor inconvenience.

I'm building a shop vise and some parts are either hard to find or very expensive. When I found this item on Amazon for the very reasonable price I couldn't resist and I am happy to say that this is high quality and low price. It samed me extra steps that the original plan required and major extra expense as well. Very happy.

Very good quality assembly. Had to return because it was too big to fit the vise I was trying to repair.

I bought this to help make a DIY woodworking vise - great decision. The bench screw is well machined and turns easily. I combined this with two one inch dowels, a couple of pieces of maple and a 'custom made 3/8 plywood faceplate ( so the outside jaw move with the handle when you open the vise) and I have a perfectly functioning vise at a bargain price!

Does and is exactly what it is supposed to be and do.I bought this screw for a budget leg vice clamp I am building for my woodwork bench and I couldn't be more pleased especially at the price point. I was a little worried when I read some of the poor reviews that others had written concerning the hardwares lack of a "garter". Yes it doesn't come with a garter or instructions and you will have to fabricate your own. I have seen some garters made out of wood but I'm going to cut a big washer in half and drill holes to attach to the face of my clamp. As others have stated in answer to the poor reviewers if you are not able to fabricate your own garter than the technical difficulty of this product is too much for you and you should buy a much more expensive product. But for a budget conscious DYI-er this product is perfect.

I was blown away by the size and heft of the screw when I opened the box. Even after reading the negative reviews I considered this a great deal. However, after looking back at the product a few weeks later I realize I didn't even get the screw mount that is shown in the picture... I'm not sure how to follow up on missing pieces here and the rest of the product is just fine so a return would stink (and cost at least half as much as the product). Would have been an easy 4 or 5 stars. I'm hoping I can find something at a big box store or elsewhere online that matches the threads.

I built a nice bench vise with this and a few long 3/8" bolts for stability. Works great! As others have noted, you need to make your own garter. I cut out a small square of 1/4" plywood, and drilled a 7/8" hole in it. Then, I stripped off one ply of wood using a chisel, resulting in a thickness of about 5/32" or so. Cut it in half, and screw it into the vise. Took about 5 minutes to do, and it works perfectly!

At less than $32, Shop Fox's Bench Screw is a terrific value....for a Chinese-made precision tool. The threads are nice and course (about 5 tpi); however, they were cut poorly, and have visible scoring/grooves on the outside edges. Also, the two threads appear to have been cut independently of each other, resulting in very uneven spacing between the two thread sets. Also, the tapped threads in the nut (provided) are so loose on the died threads on the screw that the not rocks back and forth about 1/8" in all directions.Bottom line, the nut spins freely of it's own rotational inertia for several revolutions at all points along the screw, and I think it will function well for my humble tail vise.It figures, after I ordered the Shop Fox, I stumbled on this extraordinary deal: a 21" genuine ACME-threaded bench screw for just $37.50, c. Consider buying Lee Valley's excellent quality bench screw: [...]
