How To Adjust Sliding Patio Door Rollers

Many wooden patio doors have tandem roller assemblies that allow it to slide open and closed smoothly.

  • These rollers adjust vertically, so the wheels can be raised or lowered to raise or lower your door panel without removing from its frame.
  • The rollers can easily adjust from the outside when a small plastic hole cap at the bottom of the door panel removed. After exposing the adjustment screw on the roller, you need to use a flathead or phillips screwdriver to do the job.
  • Some roller assemblies turn clockwise to raise the panel and counter-clockwise to lower it. Carefully try turning your screwdriver one way or the other to figure out which direction you need to turn.

How to Install Tandem Rollers

*Before you begin: Note that extreme caution must be exercised when handling and lifting sliding door panels; doors are heavy and can cause injury if not handled properly. Always enlist the help of a partner when lifting panels in and out of door frame.

  1. Remove the active patio door panel.
  2. Remove the adjustment screw hole cap.
  3. Take your screwdriver to pry the old rollers out.
  4. Push our new roller assemblies into position.
  5. Secure it tight with the screws (NOT included).
  6. Repeat step 2-5 on other side to replace another roller.
  7. Clean your roller track.
  8. Put door panel back in frame.
  9. Adjust side screw to fit your door perfectly.
  10. Put the plastic hole cover back in.

The hardest part is getting the door out of the frame. Turned out it really wasn't hard once you figured it out. I have an Andersen or maybe Jen Weld (Andersen off brand). I had to remove about 6 screws from the top track. Then the door popped out from the top. Lift it up and off it comes. To replace the rollers was super simple. Just carefully lay the door on its long slide so you can see the bottom. The older rollers are supposed to be held in with two screws each. Mine only had one screw each which isn't a big deal because the weight of the door will old them in.Anyway, removing the old slider may require a little prying with a flat head screw driver on the sides of it since they press fit in. Then just put the new ones in and replace the screw(s). Bam, put the door back in and wow! I should've done this 10 years ago. It's a replaceable item. You don't need a new door, just these sliders. The door slides like it was brand new. My old sliders actually had flat spots on the wheels. No wonder why it was such a pain to slide. One thing to remember. After you re-install the door you may have to level it. These rollers have a side leveling adjustment. But what's not obvious is that you turn counter-clockwise to raise the slider and clockwise to lower it. You can confirm this by trying it in your hand before install. Last thing, when you install them is to be sure to have them in the lowest (counter clockwise) position before installing the door back in. Then adjust for levelness.

Our 25+ year old sliding glass & PVC patio door has been getting increasingly difficult to open and close, and felt like the rollers weren't always rolling, so it was trying to tip as much as open or close. Way worse in the last year as we got 3 small dogs that want to go in and out all the time, and with winter coming we don't want to just leave the door open. All the options for side-adjustable rollers seemed to be the same size and dimensions, so we took a punt that they would fit ours and they did. Taking the door out was easy - adjust the rollers so the door was as low as possible (so there was maximum space at the top) and then lift it up into that gap and pull the bottom out. That was the easy part.We put the door side-edge on to a blanket to work on. Replacing the rollers on the door was also easy, just remove 2x screws on each roller and swap with the new ones, being sure to have the adjusting screw pointing toward the inside (the adjustment hole). The difficult part was getting the door back in because it seemed to be a millimetre or two too large to go back in when reversing the previous manoeuvre even with the rollers adjusted as before - inserting the top edge into the slot, lifting it up, and pushing the bottom in. In the end a couple of pieces of wood helped lift the door and push the rollers as far as they could go, and a couple of firm "nudges" encourages it into place. Finally though it went in (phew) because I'd started the job in the evening after dinner (when the Amazon delivery arrived), it was starting to go dark, and my wife was starting to use phrases like "so now what are we going to do?!?" and "I TOLD you not to do it now!!!".But it's never opened and closed as smoothly as it does now in all the years we've lived in the house. Well worth the price and the one-time effort rather than putting up with inconvenience of a sticking door.

Replaced 1967 Andersen carriage assembly in a wooden frame. Was not the same shape, so had to dremel the wood frame. Once installed, very smooth rolling action. Very nice. Takes some work to get them in there, though, not just one to one swap. Still, good construction and operation. Great price compared to big box stores. This is a pair, though. I ordered 4 (pairs, received 8 total). Luckily, I have 3 doors (6 total required). One pair for a spare, but will probably outlast the house and sliding doors. Maybe I'll sell them on Amazon hahaha

Our very old heavy wood framed patio door was becoming nearly impossible to close, the rollers were very worn down and their float system deteriorated. We could find no replacements in our small city. I was so pleased to find a Roller Assembly online which stated 31761A would work in place of our Truth 30410 1980 model. As advised, we replaced both roller assemblies, easy to swap out and, though our door was a beast to manhandle, once back in place I'm super pleased at how smoothly it glides open and close. My young grandkids can now easily let the dog out with minimal effort. It's wonderful to have a working back door again!!
