As a long-time fan of Smartwool and owner of countless pieces, I was incredibly disappointed with this amazing shirt. The fitting was spot on, with the soft merino wool making it feel and function that much better. My ONLY major issue was how easily it wore thin, as seen in the attached pictures. The frontalso wore through with what looks like mild abrasion from my belt during long hikes. While I understand that quality can sometimes vary, I expected better from a brand I've consistently trusted. I hope this feedback is considered for future product development.Smartwool will be me go-to choice for my hiking adventures, it always outperforms countless other brands I've tried. I'm just disappointed that I will soon have to retire this treasure! Many memories on the El Camino De santiago!!

I was very shocked as how loose fitting this shirt is cut. I do take care of wool: washing it in front loader on Delicate cycle with Kookaburra wool wash, then picnic table or Delicate cycle drying it. Possibly, this is cut to be tossed into regular cycle and dried hot, then shrinks to its proper size=thru hikers and bikers can't be picky with laundry facilities! I understand that but if you intend and have proper facilities to care for wool clothing (WOOL IS HAIR, NOT a fabric-amazingly lost fact it seems) I would order a size smaller. Horribly floppy in the wind. The sleeves cover past my knuckles. I am 6' 2" and a mostly muscular 240 lbs.; and XLs-and some L for performance athletic items are typically perfect for me, but this XL is just too big for me. Other than flopping in the wind and cold due to me heating up wasted, unoccupied space, this would be a good shirt-I am faced with decision to return it of toss in the the regular wash/dry cycles and see how it fits (then be non-returnable).

Update; bought 2 more one in red and another grey one, absolutely love these shirts would like to see them in a few more colors, brown/tans and maybe some blues woukd be nice. Worn this a few times now with just a cotton tshirt underneath and was quite comfortable at 36°F here in West Michigan on Lake Michigan. Will purchase more

The hype around merino wool is warranted. It feels softer than cotton, for me, seems to wick sweat as good or better than polyester, and moderates temperature fabulously. This shirt is light weight and works like a boss as a base layer for hiking and outdoor activities. It's cool enough that it doesn't feel hot when temperatures rise. Keeps you dry and comfortable and it doesn't smell like synthetic dry weave fabrics. If I could afford it, these would be all I would wear.

Bought this is advance of a bike trip earlier this fall and my husband wore it every day. Stayed fresh and odor free. He’s now wearing it several times a week at home and just requested another color for Christmas. No issues with the neck opening - maybe it’s slightly bigger than most shorts but neither of us would’ve noticed it at all if we hadn’t seen so many comments about it in reviews.
