I use the mat for working on old computer circuit boards (PCBs). It's nice and thick so no folds/creases. Keeps PCB's in place, nice for electrical insulation when testing components and protects my table from scratches and burns when soldering.

This does a great job protecting my work surface while not transferring heat from the target. It allows me to more efficiently develop my skills and to work on harder projects (see X Box motherboards). My only hiccup is that it doesn't have storage or markings to help make sure I don't misplace items, but that's easily corrected with some small tweaks or other items (i.e. a magnetic tray)

Mat is very comfortable to work on. Stays in place. Highly recommended!

This soldering mat is great. It's nice and thick for added surface protection. The size is perfect for me. One side is smooth, with a molded in ruler, the other side can act as a parts/screw keeper with a bunch of little pockets (it is a PITA to clean the small holes of solder/flux, however). Very pleased overall.

This silicone mat is much more robust that I expected. The underside is made up of little squares that creates little air pockets for extra insulation from hot items reaching your desktop. The top is smooth and does not have molded in trays for parts like I have see on some mats. I don’t know if you could put a big pan of boiling water on this and not have the heat get through, but a few seconds of having your soldering iron or heat gun on this should not be a problem. It easily rolls up to put away when you are not using it and the bright blue color makes it easy to see small parts on it. It is a good size for a smaller project or just for the immediate area where you are assembling a larger project.

When solder drips on the mat, it simply brushes off. When my professional soldering iron at 850 degrees lays directly on the mat, it is able to withstand the heat unless it left on the mat for about 30 seconds at which time the mat does get ever so slightly damaged (I tested this on the bottom). I was a little surprised that it did get damaged since it is specified to be good for 920 degrees, but the question arises that 920 degree temperature for what duration. Of course a temperature of 850 is not a temperature often used, if ever, so I am fine with the way it performed. Further, it seemed like only one spot that I tried was a little more susceptible, and after a longer duration of contact. I take this to mean that the composition of the mat has slight variations. The fact it lasts for a while is great since there is ample time for you to pick up the iron before the mat gets damaged, and a hot air nozzle is in the same category in my level of expectation. None the less, it is truly resilient albeit at perhaps an ever so slightly lesser temperature). The mat is very smooth so that when solder drips on it, it is easily removed: I just took it over to the garbage pail, turned it sideways, and all of the solder (splashes and beads) simply slid off into the pail. The size is perfect too! I really and truly am very happy with this mat and thus recommend it. The price point is not bad either.

I have been looking for some time for a flat soldering mat. Most of the ones available seem to be aimed at SMD soldering, where you have a bunch of tiny parts to keep track of, so there are a bunch of little squares on the top side to hold the parts. I have one of those, and for SMD stuff it is great. However, when I am soldering wires or through hole, I need a flat surface to be able to use my tools and fixtures at times. This mat solves that problem, and could double as a SMD mat if you flip it over. It seems well made, and is plenty big for my soldering area.

Now my boards don’t slide around when I solder them.
