These pencils aren't as soft as better pencils, but the colors are decent. I just wish there was a light tan.

I use soft oily pencils for fine points in oil color portraits- these are excellent. Bought several more - and the colorful version for eyes. As a watercolor and oil artist I have watched the colored pencil artists ARRIVE. The art is excellent and now I know why. High Quality colored pencils make a huge difference if you know how to use them. Price and PR is NOT the differential. Experiment and give great new brands a chance.

I really enjoy Spectrum Noir products and this item was no exception. I really like these! Good pigmentation, good variety of colors for portraits... I do wish there were a couple of purples and blues for shadows, but that can easily be supplemented with other sets. I uploaded a pic of a rough painting I did with the pencils used for highlights and shadows. I highly recommend these for the price and the quality. Excellent as a gift for yourself or others.

This review is for the colouring pencil set specifically designed for drawing portraits. While I was excited about the range of skin tone options and the focus on blonde to brown or reddish hair, I was disappointed to find that the set lacked black, green, and blue pencils.I understand the focus on skin tones, but without the ability to draw different hair and eye colours, I find that my portraits are limited in their range and creative potential. Or, I still need to reach for other pencils which are less compatible to blend in. Additionally, the lack of black makes it difficult to create depth and shading in my drawings. While I appreciate the effort put into creating a set specifically for portrait drawing, I believe that including basic colours like black, green, and blue would greatly enhance the versatility and usefulness of the set. As it stands, I am limited in what I can create with these pencils. That said for the price they are great value. You could try the Natural Landscape set to add some green and blues for example but you'd still lack black. In conclusion, I would recommend this set to someone who is just starting to learn about portrait drawing and wants a basic set of skin tone pencils, but for more experienced artists or those who are looking to produce a wider range of portraits, I would suggest considering another set with a more complete colour range.

I bought two of each set, and just ordered another set for my sister for her birthday. They are wax, but hold a point very well, without being too hard. If you buy all 4 sets, you have 48 colors. They are very bright and saturated, while remaining a budget set. They are beautiful. The range of colors is satisfying, and they blend well so you can make additional colors with them. They work best on smooth paper, but will handle some tooth, too. I did not test them or water solubility, so...I never remember to test for that, sorry! They have done everything I have asked of them, and I keep the swatch card with the set. They are not lightfast rated, so I don't cry when I sharpen them because I bought two sets each, and they hold up well. Not prismacolors, but sometimes you don't want prismacolors. They will play nicely with prismacolors, if you mix different brands on occasion.Downside is the packaging, which is just a box with a plastic tray in it. I had no breakage, miraculously, so I think that speaks well for the pencils. They will go in a case soon.

First the set of four boxes of pencils are very bendable because they are soft and smooth and the colors are very bright. JUST GREAT.
