If the thickness of the surface is unknown,always start with stud scan mode first.

Metal Stud
Metal Stud Scan mode:Detects metal up to 2.36 inches.
When scanning for studs .choose Stud scan or deep scan mode on thicker walls to quickly locate the center of studs.Choose Metal Scan to determine if the previous reading in Stud scan was a wood stud, metal stud, or pipe etc.

AC Wire Scan
AC Wire Scan:AC warning detecting function works continuously in stud scan,Deep Stud scan,and Metal scan mode.when live AC voltage is detected, the AC warning indicator will appear.

This stud finder operates by slowly slide device horizontally across wall, right of left. A full bars arrow with CENTER words appears on the LCD and beep sounds after locating the center of the stud
HOW TO DETECT THE STUDS?

Step 1
Calibrate After selecting the desired mode, place this tool flat against the wall, then press SCAN BUTTON to start calibration.
Tip: It is important to wait for the calibration to complete (2-3 seconds) every time before moving the scanner.

Step 2
Moving The decreasing bars will disappear and buzzer will beep, indicates the calibration is completed. Continue to keep the tool flat against the wall and begin scanning according to the arrow.

Step 3
Center Finding Continue sliding, a full bars arrow with CENTER words will display, and loudest beep sounds after locating the center of the stud. mark it with you pencil.
Then choose the Metal Scan mode to test whether it is a metal. After you confirm not a metal, it means that you found the center of a stud.

A waste of money. Even with a brand new battery in it, it loses power and shuts off within a few seconds.

im more accurate knocking on the walls. but after finding the 5 stud my knuckles hurt. this thing is much easier to use... however the accuracy leaves to be desired. its better than guessing where a stud is for sure. but not very reliable maybe mines defective. i still use it. but its only better than nothing.

I am not sure this works as well as it should have . I passed over the same marked spot and would get a different reading. It was hit it miss at times and I just ended up taking a chance and drilling into wall. I got the job done, but I think it could have been a little more accurate.

I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the package that a battery came with it! So that was a bonus!Was very easy to use and the instructions very clear. As I read past reviews, they note that the display could only be read head on, but that is not the case with a fresh battery. My one hint is to go slow! Once the finder is against the wall, move it from left to right as indicated in the instructions - but if you move it too swiftly it will miss the change, so go slow!Came at the perfect time as I'm getting ready to remodel my bedroom!!

Works passably fair. The display needs to be viewed head on, it's not nearly as clear as represented in these pictures, and anything off to an angle appears quite dim. Seems to caution adequately for hidden wires and pipes. Finds wood studs ok, and so far reliably. I've only used it on drywall situations.

Works great, and instructions were simple enough. I watched a video as well but if you’re like me and had never used one of these before:1) place stud finder against the wall before turning on2) hold down the side button until it beeps and continue holding down while scanning for studs3) Scan for studs by dragging the finder along the wall slowly and horizontally. When it beeps, you’ve found it!

With a sharp pencil to mark the edges it finds the studs are super easy to locate. Wires and metal behind the walls are almost like being behind a clear sheet of wall board.great tool to have in your tool box.For long delay in uses I would recommend removing the battery to keep it safe from discharge or harming your unit if it would decide to leak out.

Overall great product and pricing. Picked up the studs immediately without any troubles. I don't know if it's just my stud finder, but I had troubles turning it on at the beginning. I realize that you have to hit the on button and side button to keep it on whereas in the instructions it says to just hit the on button once (had to hit 3 times to turn on). Other then that, it does the job needed.
