Most guys will tell you the first thing they do to check out a stud detector is to try it on themselves. It beeps, we know we are studs, then go on our way with what ever project we needed the detector for. The PenX Wall and Ceiling stud finder didn't stick to me, so I told my wife that means I'm no longer a stud. She laughed.The spherical magnet does a good job at sliding over the wall. It can be harder to find a stud but maybe easier or quicker depending on your usage. It didn't seem to leave any marks on the wall, which was great. Getting it to stay there on the wall though was a little difficult, it often just wanted to fall. The protective cap for this is a much larger diameter than the handle, but even with that I can still feel the attractive force of the magnet on the outside of it. Also, the extension seems a little wobbly/loose. At least I don't have to go looking for 9V batteries for this.

I found this PenX magnetic stud and joist finder after unsuccessfully trying to hang a hammock/swing from the ceiling in my son's bedroom. I'd been using our old battery-operated stud finder--the kind where you have to press the side button as you slide the stud finder across the surface of your wall and then the red light goes all the way to the top of the indicator panel when it locates the beginning of a stud...you get the idea. Our stud finder is old, and I always question its reliability or if it needs a new battery. I also wasn't sure if it would work correctly to locate ceiling joists. I tried anyway and ended up drilling four holes where it indicated there'd be something...well, it was wrong. At that point, I searched the internet for how to find ceiling joists, and most of the results said to use a stud finder lol. I also came across a couple of videos that showed people using strong magnets to locate studs and ceiling joists, which gave me the idea to search Amazon for a magnetic ceiling joist finder, and that's how I found this specific PenX finder. Since it clearly states that this product can be used for walls and ceilings, I ordered it but wasn't optimistic at all that it would work well, especially on the ceiling. I stand corrected. This is a fantastic product that works reliably to locate the screws in wall studs and ceiling joists, which helps you to track the path of these objects when figuring out where to drill for mounting heavy objects. Now that I have this tool, I'll never have to worry again that my stud finder isn't giving me reliable results. I'll also never again get a sore neck while trying to locate joists in a ceiling because you don't have to get up close to the ceiling to use this product since it has a telescopic wand. The product itself is lightweight and comes with a convenient screw-on cap to protect electronics from the powerful magnet. It's the size of a small flashlight and fits nicely in a toolbox or drawer.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT.

This stud finder uses a strong magnet to locate the screw that's normally placed in the middle of the stud. The magnet is very strong to hold the tool in place hands free. We were even able to locate studs in the ceiling to hang a pendant. My cat had to test it out himself and gives 4 paws up of approval.

It's hands down the best one I've ever used - and I’ve used them all! The accuracy is incredible, and it made finding studs a breeze.
