I got this to check the drinking water in our home. We have well water, so it is always a concern if something is affecting the groundwater. We do have a pretty extensive filtration system, for a high iron content as well as reasonably high calcium. So I thought I'd give this little gadget a try. I was quite surprised to find that water out of my tap came in at over 300ppm (definitely on the high side, even though there is no real unpleasant taste) but my reverse osmosis filtered water came in at just 15ppm. Quite the difference! It at the very least confirms my tendency to use the RO water over the tap when I can. I feel the RO water tastes better, but my wife doesn't seem to care, she usually uses the tap. I might have to show her these results now!

Besides its ease of use, the feature I next most appreciate in the Smleapcc 5-in-1 meter is that it’s rechargeable; that makes it much more convenient to have on hand when needed. In addition, there’s no need to wait until the battery is completely discharged before giving it a charge; a battery charge state indicator is visible on the LCD screen. The instruction sheet included with the Meter is, to understate, sparse on details. However, it is stated on the sellers Amazon PoP page that the unit is factory calibrated and should be ready to go right out of the box. That being the case, I first tested the meter in distilled water. Of the readings I could confirm without a comparison, salinity, TDS, and EC, it arrived at the expected readings, zero for salinity, a very tiny amount for TDS, near zero, and of course, with almost no TDS’ a low reading for EC was expected and given. I then added salt to the distilled water, and as expected, both TDS and EC values increased proportionally.Based on a comparison with high-quality PH paper, the meter, out of the box, returned a value a full point higher in PH than the paper was indicating. I then soaked the probe in distilled water for an hour or so, and its PH reading dropped down to within the range the paper indicated, keeping in mind that PH paper only reads in full steps. The paper indicated a PH in the seven range and the meter indicated 6.8. These values are close enough for my purposes.Changing between modes and its associated reading is as simple as pushing a button. The Meter will verbally call out readings and modes, a feature that can be turned off by holding down the power button; it takes just a quick, brief push to turn the unit on/off. There is also a “Hold” button to lock in a reading. Another welcome feature is the large, easy to read, backlit LCD screen; nonetheless, if you’ve forgotten your glasses or are unable to see the screen for any reason, the young lady residing patiently within the meter will verbally keep you abreast of the current situation and result. The Smleapcc 5-in-1 Meter is a hand too for monitoring changes in a liquid, or even for use while traveling. It’s important to remember that its accuracy is dependent on carefully handling. Besides the included instruction sheet, there are helpful insights and usage instructions included on the units Amazon point-of-purchase (PoP) page.

First the good...the pH meter worked well for me. The written instructions for pH calibration are sort of correct, but not entirely. One it displays CAL, then the number begins to flash, leave it in the calibration solution until the flashing stops, then take it out. If you leave the voice working on the meter, it will tell you when that calibration step is complete. I have a few other pH meters (including a Bluelab pH pen), and most all of them stress the importance of keeping the bulb damp. The cap for this has a foam pad at the end. Put a couple drops of a pH pen storage solution in there and it should be safe. Be sure to check when going long periods without use. Periodically take the cap off and be sure that pad is still moist. When using this to get the pH reading, it always took a little bit to settle on a final number. The voice called out a reading, the reading paused, a few seconds later it continued on its journey to get to the correct pH. It went through this process a few times. So, in the case of pH, when the voice gives you a reading, ignore that unless the number stays the same for 5 seconds or so.The TDS meter is a whole different story (at least for me), and this is why it lost a couple stars. I thought I had it calibrated and then tested the tap water. This meter gave 880 and the other TDS meters that I have gave readings from 400 to 489. Not even remotely close. So, I calibrated again a few days later. In the meantime I also picked up a Hanna TDS meter to finally have one that I could put a lot of confidence in. The instructions appear to have you first calibrate using a 718 solution. I have looked high and low and have not found any calibration solution, or powder, to match that. So, I did the second step which was using the 1413 solution. I opened up a fresh bottle of that for this. the instructions show 718 being displayed after the calibration begins, then after that flashes 3 times you are supposed to press the calibrate button again and it will go on to calibrate to 1413. I tried doing this various ways and ended up with an Err every time. So, after that failure, just for grins, I tested the tap water. Hanna gave a reading of 455. This meter gave 300. Too low. Quite the opposite of a few days earlier when it was double the value of the other meters. Oh well.

I got this to make quick assessments of the water in my Hot Tub. I compared the results I got with the meter to both the spa water test strips, and the "drop" test kit I have. All of the numbers were very close on the important things, especially pH. Now I use the meter for random checks, and only pull out the drop test kit once in a while.I took off one star since the instructions were your typical little comic book style, with a little text, and not that useful. The meter is pretty straightforward, so even those instructions were good enough to figure out what buttons to push. A little booklet with more would be really nice, though.
