About this item

  • 72mm Made of solid Water White (WW) glass
  • Smoothes out unwanted detail like blemishes and wrinkles
  • Eliminates concerns that filter pattern will come into view on the image
  • Gives a silky smooth look to textured surfaces
  • Gives video more of a "film look"
  • Maintains a clear, overall in-focus image
  • Offers a minimum of highlight flare and reduction in contrast
  • Shows no signs of filtration

The Digital Diffusion/FX filter is the filter of choice for making people look great without evidence of filtration. These filters are similar to the Tiffen Black Diffusion/FX without the internal dot pattern.

I tested DDFX2 vs DDFX4This is a quick test just to show sharpness and the halation effect. Shot on my Sony A7S3 using Carl Zeiss 35mm f2.8 lens. All photos taken at F2.8 center focused, All photos were zoomed in 200% focus on the toolbox letters. You wouldn't be able to tell much difference without zooming in and pixel peeping. The photos I'm sharing in this review I took from the back LCD screen of my camera. Sorry it wasn't the true photos but It still a very accurate test in showing the filters effects.Photo 1: #586 No FilterPhoto 2: #587 DDFX2Photo 3: #588 DDFX4Photo 4: stack photo for comparison Top: No Filter, Middle: DDFX2, Bottom: DDFX4My Opinion: I have Tamron 35-150 f2.8 lens when I use the DDFX2 it gives the same softness as using my Carl Zeiss lens, which is great I get a slight vintage lens look on a modern lens.DDFX4 is still very subtle, the biggest difference when pixel peeping is DDFX4 has a slightly elevated halation, a makes lens flares slightly (look at letter "N" in the #588) more pronounced it seems to have slightly haze effect only noticable in very fine lines. Again, Only When Pixel peeping even then it was hard for me to tell a big difference. I would use the DDFX4 when trying to emulate the 16mm Film look it has slightly more character for this look.CONS: you will always have this soft effect no matter if your F-Stop is 1.8, 2.8, 4, 8, 16 etc. I've tested this out. Center focus will never get sharper with the filter strength you choose. Only noticable difference is Edges of lens are sometimes soft. They will slightly sharpen up only up to the filter strength you choose. Also Tiffen filter will give a green refection from a bright light source that hits center of lens.Hope this helped making your decision.TIP: Screenshot my photos and compared them on your phone for better side by side viewing.

Excellent for 4K cameras and sharp lenses that need softness. It doesnt bloom highlights like haze but softens edges while keeping resolution.

Another clean and smooth filter. Both this #2 and the #3 are my portrait filters for younger folks.

It makes a subtle difference and I suppose at FX2 that is what one would expect. I am thinking for some over the top I need to invest in FX4 as well!

It is very subtle. You wont really see it straight off. You can kind of see it a bit in post when you get a picture into your editing program of choice and zoom it. It almost seems like noise but its really not it makes it softer definitely. When looking at these the FX4 is too much for my taste however the 2 gets it just right.

Received the filter in just a couple of days! Just finished using the filter in a photo shot with a middle aged model, created perfect images that were softened just enough to show the model in a fantastic image.
