I had an old shovel with a broken fiberglass handle that had been left behind years ago by some contractors. I probably should have just thrown it out-- it was covered in concrete and rust and had led a pretty hard life-- but I decided to turn it into a camping shovel.I removed the handle and soaked the head for a week in vinegar, which loosened all the concrete and rust. After a wire brushing, I slopped a thick coat of black paint on it. The paint won't last once I actually start shoveling but that's OK.I wanted a short, lightweight wooden handle, preferably with a D-grip on the end. What I wanted was something longer than a typical hiking shovel but shorter than a full-length gardening shovel. I wanted it to be long enough to dig a small trench or fire pit, shovel dirt onto hot coals, and clear snow away if needed. It didn't have to fit in a backpack but it had to be about as portable as an axe so that it could be carried to a campsite.This handle is a good match for that. Short enough to make a light, handy shovel but long enough to allow me to dig up fairly compacted soil. The D-grip makes up for the shorter length and makes it easier to sling dirt around.The quality looks good. The grain runs lengthwise along the handle and is relatively straight. The D-grip is made of steel with a wood handle. Durability looks fine, though I won't know for certain until I take it camping.Installation was easy. I tapped it into the head of the shovel with a rubber mallet, making sure the D-grip was parallel to the blade. When I'd tapped it as far in as it would go, I cross-drilled it and inserted the included rivet. The rivet was too long as supplied so I ground it down almost flush and then peened the end down with a hammer. The handle is held very securely in place, though again I'll have to wait for actual field use to see how it holds up.Yes, I could have bought a new shovel for not much more money. Instead, I rescued an old shovel and kept it out of the scrap metal pile. The handle looks stout and I think it will do anything that I ask of it.

Replaced the handle of one of my old made in England forged garden planting spades (the one on the left in the photo) with this Truper replacement handle that is a good match in dimensions to the original all wood handle (as seen on the right shovel in the photo). Rudimentary wood working is needed to custom fit the end taper of this replacement handle for the socket of your spade's blade. I used a bench belt sander for most of the shaping and a fine wood rasp for finishing touches after test fitting. The wood of the handle is ash, with nice even, straight grain that should provide years of service.
