This tube is the only frame grid 12ax7 in current production, and one of three made on the same machinery. The first was the Telefunken ECC803S, an expensive specialized tube that was mostly used for test equipment. They're virtually impossible to find, it's probably not worth looking unless you're willing to spend a fortune. The diamond on the bottom of the tube makes them a little harder to fake than the later Tesla tubes. The same tube was produced by Tesla as the E83CC, but a lot of the tubes being sold as those on the used market are fakes-- the JJ ECC83S shares the same plate structure, but not the frame grid design. Since the JJ is a cheap tube, it's fairly easy to just replace the label and sell for a markup.JJ now owns the same machinery that had previously been used by Tesla and Telefunken, but this tube is probably missing some important elements of the previous designs to bring the cost down-- I have not seen any specification about what plate current difference they allow for, what the life expectancy of the tubes is, how the cathode deteriorates, and modern manufacturers likely don't have access to the same quality materials that were used in older tubes. But a frame grid tube should have low microphonics, low noise, and high transconductance if done right-- and this tube does seem fairly loud compared to other modern 12ax7 types I've tried, so they've got that last part right anyway.I'll update the review and rating after a few years, but so far they seem like a perfectly worthy purchase for the price.
