I’ve been using the Via Velo Bike Chain Lock for a few weeks now, and overall, I’m really impressed with how sturdy and user-friendly it is. The lock feels solid and heavy (in a reassuring way), and the 5-digit resettable combination adds an extra layer of security compared to the standard 4-digit locks. Pros: Heavy-Duty Build: The chain is thick and well-constructed, making it feel tough to break through. Perfect for securing bikes, scooters, or even gates. Easy to Set the Combination: Resetting the code was simple thanks to the clear instructions. It’s nice to ditch the keys and just use a combination. Length is Just Right: At 2.95 feet (about 35 inches), it’s long enough to lock my bike frame and wheel to a bike rack without struggling. Protective Sleeve: The chain is wrapped in a fabric cover that prevents scratches on your bike – a thoughtful touch. Cons: A Bit Heavy: While the weight adds security, it’s not the most lightweight option if you’re looking to carry it on long rides. Combination Numbers Could Be Smoother: The dials work fine but can be a little stiff when rotating, especially in cold weather. Final Thoughts: If you’re looking for a reliable, heavy-duty lock to keep your bike or valuables safe, this one is a solid choice. It balances security and convenience well, and the price point is fair for the level of protection you get. Just be prepared for a little extra weight – but for peace of mind, it’s worth it!

The item delivered was just as described and photographed. The instructions in the description are clear and setting the lock to your desired 5 digits was quite easy to do.The actual length of the chain is 30" from end to end, and the lock hardware adds about 4" to that length. The lock moves from selected digit by half steps. When setting the desired code, the half steps are ignored (code is set at next full step), but when unlocking the selection must be on the exact number and the half steps will not allow the lock to be opened.A safety note: Many of this style of lock can be quickly opened by pulling tight and turning until the selection resists movement - and then you're at the correct number. This lock seems to be high enough quality that as long as you're not just one digit off on your code, then that's not a problem. (With only the last digit incorrect, the lock delivered was easy to solve the last digit - but one should never lock by only changing the last digit, and with other digits changes the code was no longer as obvious.)The fabric around the chain should keep the chain from scratching while locked and does a good job of adding bulk and hiding the quality of the chain. For the price, this appears to be a decent lock as long as you're just using it during the day to slow down a thief, or hopeful that they will pick a different bike. It would not be a good idea to rely on this lock in a high theft area while not attended.

Better then I expected and my boys loved them. They are heavy though, as there is chain under the wrap (I assumed is would have been a lighter weight braided cable)

Disclosure: I received this item free of charge though the AmazonVine program, for purposes of trying, testing, and then giving an honest review. There are no incentives for positive or negative reviews. This isn't my first bicycle chain. I'm comparing it against the variety of bicycle securing devices that I already own. So far, it's right about in the middle- though to be fair, the highest security chain I have is too heavy to be practical, so without that outlier, this one ranks pretty high on my view. The good:• It's reasonably lightweight because it isn't excessively large (contrast the "Fugheddaboutit" I have which weighs 15 pounds.) Without weighing it, informally I'd compare it to a hardback book or a couple of paperbacks, or maybe a textbook.• The chain itself is wrapped in a woven, smooth synthetic fiber that feels durable, and which will protect your bike's paint from being scratched by the chain itself. It's also available in Several colors, including bright neon colors, more subtle/dark colors, or black. The bright ones are good for a visual reminder that there is a chain- in case you forget to put it on, or forget that you locked it and try to tank or ride the bike away. Oops. The high visibility is also, maybe, a deterrent for potential thieves, for the same reason: immediately visible that there's a chain on the bike.• The number code is settable and re-settable, so you can pick your number (and make note of it somewhere secure, in case you ever forget, e.g. if you don't ride for a few months or forget immediately after setting it.) This is convenient and feels more secure to me, like a changing password. The bad:• It might be a little bit small, depending on what you're looking for, on the balance triangle between security and cost and weight. I personally think it's fine, but I don't rely on one type of security device, and this would be one of two for most situations for me. (A u-shaped one, or a twisted braided cable with a no-cut padlock might be the other.)• I don't know to what extent this has been lab-tested against various types of break-ins or break-throughs. For instance, it might be possible to cut through the sleeve (unless it's Kevlar or similar), and then use bolt cutters to cut a link of the chain. On the other hand it might be cut-resistant on the outside or inside or both. I just don't know, and it would require destructive testing to find out. And either way it's at the very least a deterrent, and an inconvenience, to a potential thief.Overall:I do think this is worth buying, as one of at least two security devices. It's medium size, not too heavy nor flimsy, seems to be well-made, comes in an assortment of colors including both subtle and bright, and it could deter a thief even if it's not indestructible (which no device ever is, and that's why two different type of devices helps immensely.)

This lock is lightweight and the combination is easy to set. It is light enough to carry easily or to loop around your bike frame while you are biking. It doesn't get in the way of pedaling and it is barely noticeable. The colors are fun and vibrant. The length makes it easy to fit around bike posts, even when you're crowded out by other bikes. I like that it has a combination lock instead of a key - one less thing to carry. I took off a star because the combination lock feels cheaply made (although functional) and I think it would be easy to break this chain with the right tools. For a lightweight lock to be used in lower traffic areas where your bike is less likely to be stolen, this fits the bill.

This is a great heavy duty bike lock/chain. It has thick links of chain and they seem capable of withstanding some cutting attempts, unless would be thieves are walking around with some serious heavy duty bolt cutters. The five digit combination lock is easy to set and feels secure when locked and like that you don't need to fumble about with keys that you could potentially lose. The bike chain is quite heavy but that is because it is made from heavy duty chain links so this is an acceptable trade off for a quality item.

Whilst this is not a certified bike lock I feel it is certainly robust enough to deter opportunistic theives. As has been shown on countless youtube videos even the highest rated locks can be overcome by the determined professional. The chain has a reasonable weight to it and is covered in a protective braid to avoid damaging what is being locked up. It has a 5 spool combination lock that has an easy process to allow any of 100000 combinations to be chosen. Should extra length be needed a second lock can be daisy chained to give the additional length. It can also be used to secure gates or in my case garden tools in the shed.Overall it's an inexpensive option to provide additional security but if you are using it to secure an insured bike check the policy requirements.

I own a Heavy Duty Via Velo Gold Rated U-Lock, i love that thing and definitely protects my bike when i need to place it for an extended (bear in mind that extended means a couple of hours) amount of time on a rack or out of sight in general. The issue i have with U-Locks is its inherent weight and sheer size, when i go out with my ultralight water hydration backpack i only carry a mini bike pump and a multitool for emergencies, adding a U-Lock adds a lot of weight to my backpack.I was torn between a cable lock and a lightweight chain that wasn't super thin, and i found the perfect balance here, at around 1.3 Pounds this chain lock is pretty lightweight, but 6mm links will provide a decent amount of protection and it's not as easy to cut as a cable lock, sure, it can definitely be cut with the proper tools, but it'll take either larger tools or more time than the cable one.The locking mechanism is smooth and setting a new combination was easy using the standard procedure.I didn't go and try to pick it or find if it's "double gated" or has fake trips to throw you off as every locking mechanism is only as strong as its weakest link, thieves won't be picking, they will be cutting. The bottomline is that i ordered this Via Velo Chain for short(er) stops or longer stops if within my sight to secure my bike, it feels sturdy and a great balance of weight and protection, also looks super cool. At $14 this is a bargain, definitely recommended!
