looking for a heavy duty soldering pencil/iron to do stained glass hobby stuff. this meets the needs very well, the ability to change the tips is a very good feature. variable power settings will make sure it is hot enough to do teh job as needed

It's a versatile soldering iron with variable heat control. It came with only one tip. For the price I would have expected to receive a few selection of different size tips.

This crapped out on me in the first use. Got red hot in the middle, sparks flew so i turned it off. Turned it back on and although it shows as 'on' it was dead at all temps - no where near hot enough to solder. Terrible quality, and can't get a return.

Working with stained glass I wanted an iron with a little more mass so the tip would not lose the heat too fast. I changed the tip size one size smaller and it is the perfect tool.

Absolutely love this soldering iron station! The variable wattage feature is a game-changer, giving me precise control for a variety of projects. The grip is comfortable, making it easy to work for extended periods without fatigue. It heats up quickly and maintains a steady temperature, which is perfect for detailed soldering. The compact design is a bonus, as it fits neatly on my workbench without taking up too much space. Highly recommend this Weller station for both hobbyists and professionals!

The stand and wet wipe sponge all in one place makes the job sooo much easier and convenient for the iron. A little spendy in my opinion compared to what it cost in 2002, but better price than stain glass sites.

I do a lot of soldering and own a Weller WTCPTFE soldering station but it was a bit too small for the job. I was soldering large, heavy tabs to 3oz double sided PC board. The tip has enough surface area to transfer the heat. Problem solved!

This product includes a soldering station base plus a Weller WLIR80 Iron. Here are my observations from using it:1. The tip. The first thing to mention is that I purchased this soldering iron thinking I could buy a needle or conical tip to swap out with the included heavy duty 10mm chisel tip. However, smaller replacement tips are not readily available. The base of the tip holder is too large (10 mm). This soldering iron only accommodates these larger diameter heavy-duty tips. The replacement tips for this model run about $18/each. The lower settings do not really heat up this tip, so I’m not really sure what the purpose is of allowing the wattage to go to such a low setting if you can only use this with a heavy-duty chisel tip. Weller does make soldering irons for use with smaller diameter pencil tips (different model) so I’m wondering if this adjustable station/base would be compatible with other (smaller) Weller soldering irons.2. The design. One thing that I personally didn’t like is that the plug for the soldering iron is on the left side of the soldering station. This means the cord gets directed straight at your work area and you need extra room to push it out of the way. If you place the soldering station far away from your work area this might be ideal to have it directed at you, but if you just have a small work area set up it would be nice if the wire weren’t directed right at your work area.3. Using it. The only thing that I had on-hand which needed repair was a LiPo battery wire that my son pulled out of the socket. I probably shouldn’t have used such a large chisel tip on such a small wire. There wasn’t much room to fit the tip and the solder, but it turned out fine. The soldering iron takes a while to heat up, probably because I’m not used to such a large tip. I like the idea of being able to adjust the heat setting to accommodate a wider range of uses. However, it would be much more useful if there was a readout to give you an idea of the heat setting. It goes up to 470C, so I suppose you can extrapolate.4. This comes with 4 pieces: the iron, the station, the metal cage, and a piece of plastic to attach the cage to the station. Once you assemble it, it snaps into place and it is not easy to disassemble. Also, since the tip is pointed upwards, the soldering iron tends to drop down onto the cage if you’re not careful how you put it down. Call it gravity. This comes with a sponge too, however, it is really small and thin, so not especially useful considering the size of the tip. The grip on the iron is pretty good and ergonomically friendly.5. On button lights up. The on/off button lights up when it is on. This is helpful to easily notice if it was left on.In summary, this is fine, but keep in mind that availability of replacement tips might be an issue (requires a 10mm base). But if all you need are these chisel tips then it would be fine there are a number of heavy-duty replacement options.
