good vale, wasn't real sharp when received but did take an edge and seems to hold it fairly well

This gouge is a great value. Out of the package it came with a just-OK edge, but after putting a P65/A/2 profile on it with my Tormek it works great. Today I used it for spindle turning as well as bowl rouging on some oak and it worked splendidly. It held its edge over two pieces and is still sharp. For small-to-medium work this is a great gouge.

Poor quality. The flute is short and shallow. Only 2 inches of usable steel. The handle is unusually small. I returned the item for a prompt and easy refund.

I have used this tool and it holds an edge, handles smoothly and preforms as expected. I would recommend this tool.

I ordered this one because it was cheap and I could use it to practice a couple custom grind shapes on it with my new Tormek tool grinder. As a retired Machinist with over 25yrs on machines and working with different tooled steels, the markings HSS usually means High Speed Steel. Which usually means that the steel will take and hold a good cutting edge and is at least a bit harder than regular mild steel. Well, the steel for this one must have come out of a race car, cuz it sure don't hold an edge like any other HSS tools I have! But, for what I bought it for, a tool to practice different grinding styles and shapes on, for that it has worked out ok. As for being the turning tool that it's supposed to be, it doesn't hold an edge very long at all. It's only useful for very soft woods and even then the edge doesn't last as long as it takes to sharpen it.So save your efforts of sharpening for a tool that's worth having. Add a little more cash to what this one will cost and get a good one that will last you several years and you will be happy with. Unless your just looking for something to grind on for practice like I was.
