Knocked off 1 star simply because it does feel cheap. It however works VERY well. As long as you take care of it, it should serve you many years. I like it .

I recently have been installing fiber optic cables between several of my buildings on the farm. The fiber replaces Cat5. Mainly made the change for bandwidth and another reason was to isolate each building from lightening strikes. That was especially done once I installed a solar array. This small pen like tool is wonderful! It quickly can connect to your type of fiber (I have lc ends) to test it out by emitting a robust laser beam. Choose your adapter for your cable type. It just takes two AA batteries. You have either constant on or glint mode (flashes). The glint word reminded me of that commercial where two ladies are starting to argue where the one calls the other 'You lint licker!'If you have networking problems, then this tool will rule out a bad fiber cable. It will do it very easily and a known good cable end will light up. I would advise anyone who ventures into fiber to obtain one of these.

I am a systems administrator who occasionally has to works on cabling my systems in two data centers. I do not deal with very long fiber runs (I measure in meters, not kilometers) and I rarely need to worry about locating faults because if it is a patch cable (which they always are for me) we just replace them. What I do have a use for is a way to simplify tracing unlabeled or incorrectly labeled fiber cables through patch panels and across racks or rows of racks. This tool has been such a time saver for me when I'm working alone (which is most of the time) in a data center. I can attach this tool to a cable and very plainly see which cable the light is shining out of. It works a treat. The build quality is acceptable. If this were an overpriced name brand product, I would expect more; but for this price it is great. I installed some lithium batteries before adding it to my tool kit so that I wouldn't have to worry about them corroding. The FC Male to LC Female Adapter being included really adds to the value. My largest complaint is that there is no way to store the FC Male to LC Female Adapter in the included pouch. My second complaint is that the included pouch is very low quality and cheap. Both of these complaints are easy for me to overcome because I just store this tool (with the case and adapter) in the original box, inside of a larger toolbox. If I needed to keep this tool within reach on my belt, then I would find or make a better pouch because the included one really is garbage. This tool is a real time saver and pays for itself in the time that it takes to trace one or two cables!

Overall, I'd say this is a very nice VFL for Sysadmins and Network Admins who occasionally need to locate a break or, as I find, locate an unlabeled fiber that was installed many many years ago by a previous person who (of course) is no longer employed at the organization. The body is metal, although the end near the laser itself may be a dense plastic or aluminum (it's certainly non-ferrous). Build quality feels good overall though. The unit comes with a short detachable lanyard, a little carrying pouch (with belt loop), and a fiber adapter and a little sleeve. I expect most people will immediately lose the pouch, as it's fairly basic, but if you need it on your belt it might prove a bit more useful. As far as distance, I don't have anything long-distance to test with, but in my limited testing it lights up fiber dust caps without issue at shorter distances really well. The VFL also has a Glint (flash) feature, which can help with finding a strand more easily in a densely-packed fiber box or cabinet. Finally, there's a safety sleeve that you rotate (the upper body of the unit, see pictures) to cover the sliding switch. While it's not perfect, it does help prevent the device from accidentally being turned on and creating an optical hazard.Cons:My only gripe with the unit is the included adapter. I greatly appreciate that they include the adapter, but unfortunately the threaded sleeve does not come anywhere close to being able to actually thread onto the unit. See attached pictures. It's a solid 5+ mm gap between the end of the sleeve and the start of the threads, so there's no way to screw it on. That said, it works just fine as-is, and as long as you're not hanging it from the fiber, it should stay attached just from friction. For me, I don't expect this to ever be a problem.

got this to replace a dead one i had for work. it is bright, we call it the torch at work. so far we have used it to locate fibers that are spliced together at 26kft, you have to give the fibers a little bend and they will light up. if you are close (15kft) the fiber is easily seen.

The descriptions accurately represent the functionality and seems to work great. The biggie in my mind is how portable the device is. I do a lot of fiber and copper cabling, toning, testing, etc. and those of you in the same world will relate to the amount of gear your typically carry in your packs. Some of these are very large and bulky devices like BERT testers, toners, and other various tools so space is always limited as well as how much weight you can actually carry in one trip. I love the size and weight of this and it works well for the work I do.The only small concern to even note is long term use. It is a little light and I can see packing it with a bunch of other tools may eventually damage it but I think keeping it in its sheath should be fine as it is heavier material.Otherwise I am satisfied with the price point, functionality, and portabilityTheMansReview overall rating: 4 stars
