This does not work with rechargeable batteries. Recommend Lithium batteries instead of alkaline as you won't have the issue of leaking batteries. Remember to keep them out of the cold though because lithium batteries lose their charge faster in the cold. It runs my Yaesu FT5DR very well as a backup battery. It's good to have in your kit so you can source additional power sources other than the regular battery.

This battery case works very well for monitoring and has a decent run time when good batteries are used. Best for monitoring but was able to hit a repeater using it as well

Yaesu is as good as it gets! I have a FT5DR. I bought the fast charger base unit that the charge cord plugs into. With the base unit the radio charges in half the time as using just the wall cord. With this battery box three AA batteries you can get up to almost 12 hours of radio use. Awesome. Using GPS and other features of the radio requires power and the price of this authentic, Yaesu accessory, you have power! Get it and you won't be disappointed.

If you need a hand held transceiver that can run a long time on battery, the Yaesu FT5D ain't it. Great radio, but it flattens rechargeable batteries quickly. That's why I bought the battery case. If power isn't available to recharge the rechargeable battery, AA batteries are easy to find. Should be in your "go kit" if you intend to deploy during emergency situations.

The power output, when using AA cells is a little less than 1 watt, which isn't much, but is good enough for short range work. More importantly, it allows you to power the radio for listening, monitoring, scanning, recording with just a pile of AA batteries. I've been using my FT3D as a scanner lately, and this lets me save my lithium ion batteries for two-way use, while powering the radio for scanning and recording with just my pile of AA NiMH batteries.

It's nice and does what I need it to do. If my lithium batteries fail or I'm in a remote place (camping, etc.) I can use 3 - AA batteries to power my radio. The battery life isn't great of course but it's really about an alternative power source. My main issue is that it's overpriced. I can get an aftermarket lithium replacement for less than the price of this case that has no batteries. Yes I knew this before I purchased it but I point it out for others looking at it and considering their options. I ONLY purchased this for the alternative power source option. If I had to do it again I think I would simply just buy another aftermarket battery only based upon price. If this was half the price I think the value would be there. Anyway food for thought.
