Really nice sturdy wooden yarn holder. You just need to put in three screws and they include a screwdriver to tighten it and all the holes are already pre-drilled. It was very easy to put together. The wood has a nice, smooth finish. However, that being said, yarns like silk tend to catch on any little splinter so if that's a concern I suppose you could sand it a bit more. For my purposes, this is not an issue.I can fit a couple balls of yarn onto it. For two example two balls of lettlopi Icelandic wool fit on there (since I'm currently knitting an Icelandic wool sweater). See attached picture to get an idea of the size. This is really nice when doing color work. The tip of the holder is magnetic and it can spin around as the yarn unwinds when you're knitting.I think if you knit really quickly this is a must! It's much smaller and more portable than an umbrella Swift. I haven't had it fall over or anything which I was a little worried about. I don't really need to use the attached holder yet, but you could fit at least an American size 10 pair of knitting needles in itI would highly recommend this as a gift for anyone you know that likes to knit with two colors or just and it's really quickly. Crocheters will also greatly benefit from it!

First, the good. The unit is attractive overall, and seems sturdy. The "spool" part that holds the yarn is connected to the arm above it with a strong magnet, to allow the spool to turn while you pull out more yarn but stay attached. I like that it has the little cup part to hold one or more crochet hooks, as I tend to just lay them somewhere or stick them in the yarn, which means sometimes I misplace or lose one. Now, the less good and the reason I took away a star. There are no instructions with the unit on how to put it together. It's fairly self-explanatory, but not completely. I finally looked it up online again and found that the guide for putting it together is included as a photo in the product description on Amazon. I found that the finish isn't as uniform as I'd like. It looks to me as though the unit was sprayed with stain in large quantities in such a way that some areas didn't receive any, mostly in corners. It's not a deal breaker, but it does lower the beauty of the piece somewhat. Probably no one but me will notice. I'm wary that the spool will pull loose from the arm above if I hit a snag on the skein where I have to pull a little harder to get the yarn, but that's manageable. This has a nice slot to prop up your cell phone horizontally while crocheting/knitting, but I don't think the base of the unit as a whole is heavy enough to stay in place, even with the phone there, while pulling yarn from the skein. If I put something heavy on the base to ensure it doesn't move while I use the yarn spool, it would cover up the slot for the cell phone. I guess you could use small but heavy objects on the base that would anchor it without blocking the cell phone area. I haven't used it in all configurations yet. Generally, it's an attractive piece, nice for keeping your skein and hook/needles organized especially in a living room or family room where you don't want yarn spilling all over the place. However, with its not quite heavy enough base and the unevenness of the stain on the wood, I wouldn't pay the current price of $39.99. I would consider it if the base was attached to a heavy metal piece to keep it anchored and if the stain was evenly applied.

A nice looking item, that will look just fine in your main room, the stain is not perfect but you can't notice that unless you inspect it closely. I really have only tried it while crocheting with small balls of cotton yarn, while making some amigurumi figures. The problem I had with these balls were that they were so light and would never stay put in a bowl so this worked great for keeping them in place and I can fit several of the small balls of yarn on here so easy to pick up the colour I need.I like too that there is a little pot for keeping my crochet hooks in since I do use a couple of different sizes and the small hooks can get lost so easily. There is a slot for my cell phone too, I wish that my tablet fit on that, since I mostly put my patterns on my tablet for the bigger screen, but I can put my phone there and listen to my audio book as I crochet. The magnet seems very strong and holds the spindle in place allowing it to spin easily.I'm not sure it would be heavy enough to cope with large balls of thicker yarn, if they didn't turn easily you might end up pulling the whole thing towards you because it simply does not have the weight to hold it in place. I haven't tried it with larger balls of yarn though so I can't say for sure.

I do a bunch of different yarn-related crafts, and one of the tasks that sometimes frustrates me is winding yarn from cakes onto bobbins for weaving. I also wind handspun (or commercial) yarns from hanks into cakes, and I always do it twice to avoid having the yarn too tightly wound in the cake and not getting an accurate knitting or crochet experience. Going from that initial tight ball of yarn to a cake that's loose enough to store can be a pain, but putting it on this has changed my frustration levels immensely!I haven't tried it yet for a knit or crochet project, but that's next on the list. I'm just so pleased with it for using it with weaving that I'm tempted to buy a second one to use for non-weaving projects so I don't have to move this one away from the loom!Initially I had scoffed at how effective this kind of thing would be, but I am a solid convert. This one was easy to put together and I'm using the little cup thing to hold scissors and my yarn gauge/ruler tool. The magnet means it spins with very little resistance, but it doesn't just spin endlessly and unspool everywhere. If you're in doubt, take my word for it and buy this now!
