It is a good idea and works well for a jar opener. The base of the handle rotates to increase and decrease the size of the band. The band is a little short for larger containers. It is fine for a wide mouth mason jar but does not fit over a costco sized coconut oil lid. It will work on caps as small as a water bottle even slightly smaller. If they made the band about 1- 2 inches larger it would be a great tool. There is a collar at the middle of the handle that locks and unlocks the rotary part of the handle and keeps it from spinning. If you try to spin the handle in the lock position you will hear clicking and it will be difficult to spin. The locking mechanism is a little difficult to unlock and lock. Probably will not need a man to unlock it but does require some hand strength. Once unlocked you can probably use the tool without locking it again. Remember to unlock the collar before rotating. It does not sound like it is the highest quality and may not hold of if you use it in the clicking lock mode position.Overall, It helps a lot in opening jars. Other openers I have used were difficult to position onto the container and/or did not provide enough grip to help much. The only negative comments I have, is that there could a smoother working locking mechanism and a 2 inch bigger band to fit around larger lids.Good Luck

I make my own mint simple syrup, and sometimes the jar gets stuck if I don't rinse the threads super well. I'm a burly dude, but I'm also impatient and don't want to sit there with hot water running over my mason jar before it frees up! Sadly this jar opener is not up to the task. Conceptually it's great, but it also lacks what's necessary for two reasons:1. The locking mechanism is quite challenging to engage/disengage by clicking up and down. I played with it a bit to see if it loosened up over time, and no change. This makes it difficult for those with smaller/weaker hands. [Note: This locking mechanism isn't even mentioned on the product card, I figured it out by playing with it]2. The grip teeth aren't grippy (they're a hard plastic rather than a softer grippier rubber). This means it's more likely to slip around on the jar rather than bite into it. This makes it more difficult for those who are trying to wrench a really challenging lid.I can see this working for "normal" situations, but it couldn't loosen a (VERY aggresively hand-tightened, granted) peanut butter jar; it just kept spinning no matter how tight I'd make the strap. It worked fine on my olive jar, but it also wasn't a difficult jar to open in the first place.I've never tried a jar opener before so I can't speak to how it compares to others, but at this price point, I'd expected it to be pretty top-notch.

I'm not a senior, nor do I have weak hands. I'm a healthy, fit, young adult male who has lifted weights every day for the last 10 years. Some jars are just hard to open. It's a reality I've had to accept.I often would use the rubberized pads to attempt to open stuck jars. They'd just slip or the lid was too large or too small to get a functional grip anyway. After a few minutes out of the fridge, condensation starts to build on the lid and then it just becomes impossible. This is solid. Really solid. My first thought was "heck, I could use this to change oil filters". This is literally a torque wrench for jar lids.It has a very easy to adjust the loop diameter, reaching a maximum lid diameter of around 4 inches (this is a very big lid!) using a twisting portion of the handle. The handle has grip ridges that make securing the loop extremely tight easy.I'm confident there is a hefty metal screw rod in the center of this and it gives it extreme rigidity and heft. The exterior is plastic, but there's definitely a steel spine to this. The rubber/plastic "teeth" on the inner part of the opener seem to be less durable, and will likely wear down over time as they started to deform after a few uses. The material used seems too stiff and deforms when impacted. This shouldn't meaningfully affect operation, though. The locking mechanism is easy to operate, even while under tension. It clicks firmly, so accidentally causing it to lock or unlock is an unlikely occurrence.Overall, extremely strong design that has a wide range of applications and is extremely simple to operate.Very effective design that I am impressed with.
