They're plastic. I'm going to keep them because they're cheap but I'm also buying a metal one now. I thought it was being slick getting 2. Not so much. The weight of my camera on one of these really extended, bends down slightly. I'm using a go pro. I wouldn't even attempt my DSLR. I do have it extended by tying them together. If you just use one, with a gopro on each side or microphone and gopro, then you'll be fine.
