It has two sides. One side has an opening that is circular, the other is like an oval. The oval goes on the drive/action side. The circle is for the drive direction switch side.I installed it incorrectly the first go, and it started walking itself off of the head during use. Credit to the item for being tight (and difficult) to install, and my having to install, remove, reinstall. No tearing. No instructions for this direction are provided, so learn from my bad.Regarding protection, it is probably more for dust that could get into the oscillating paddles on the sides of the head. If you have this tool, you know what I'm talking about. I'm not worried about getting a scratch on this thing, as I would feel safe using it as a hammer, but crud getting into the open ratcheting mechanism is a worry. If you don't have this tool, or a power ratchet in general, your furniture-assembly and basic oil change is taking 3x as long. Learn the joy of a power-ratchet.I may remove it (again), to pack grease into the paddles underneath it first. Not that there were any instructions to tell me if there is a chemical problem with packing an oil-based molybdenum under (an assumed) silicone?.
