This is an old design that works as well today as it ever did. The softer leads (4B and up) are more fragile when sharpening and often break when using other sharpeners. Not with this one. It's easy to use and clean. Good value

The ap17 sharpener on so good. I bought the smaller Mitsubishi Pencil Pocket Sharpener DPS6001P and at least run that one and know when my pencil is sharped correctly.

I was looking for a sharpener that could Sharpen rOtring holders, koh-i-noor and some of Staedtler's non-standard 2mm lead holders.Over the years I have built up a few extra holders and wanted to try them and the heavier feel of rOtrings works but sharpening it to a point was not easy like Staedtler's.Since I got this, i tested it on 4 models of koh-i-noor (my 6b, 8b and 10b holders) and it works on koh-i-noor soft leads. Also on my 2h, hb, 2b holders (rOtring and Staedtlers premiere holder) and it sharpened perfectly. So for me it is a 5 out of 5.NOTE: the compartment underneath that holds the extra sizes and extra filters requires you push it in to take it out push it in and then you can slide it out of the compartment. You are not going to break it if you push the cross beam it has dead center.

I used one of these back in the old days when it was board drafting instead of cad. It puts a really good point on my various grades of lead. Very happy with it and would recommend if your doing a lot of drawing like I do.

This pointer is awesome. It accommodates larger holders like the Staedler 925-25-20, it allows one handed operation when clamped to the table, it's wicked fast- 4-5 turns puts a needle point on an unsharpened/broken lead, and it has built in storage for the various collars and spare cleaning inserts. 1000% better than the little pocket twist pointers if you have any nicer large diameter holder that won't fit in the common Staedler and Dahle rotary pointers. This is the one to get.

Compared to the old castell 60, this thing is a chinese piece of junk. I actually get a better point with a handheld staedtler that costs $9. It is a visual but not functional copy of a "real" pointer. I guess there is just no demand for well made hand drafting supplies anymore. Don't waste your money.

No way as good as the old fashion heavy weight sharpeners I use. Continually breaks the leads. Not worth the purchase

It does what it says. I was expecting a little heavier unit than what arrived. It's all pre-molded plastic and feels "cheap" but once I locked it down to my drafting table it didn't really matter. Also the color is different than the model pictured. The main body is fire engine red rather than the gray color shown. That didn't matter much to me either. It came with several different size collars which are shipped inside the main body and it took a minute to figure out what was rattling around in there and how to get them out. No directions are included with the product. The collars are color coded but do not specify size so I had to try each out before I found the correct size for my lead holders. All together it took me about fifteen minutes to get it set up on my table and it has been in heavy use for over a week with no problems. The convenience of sharpening my lead without having to stop and pick up a lead pointer is great. I can't say it changed my life forever but over all a good product that does what it says and I would definitely buy it again. However if a sturdier unit is available I would also consider upgrading depending on the price.
