TLDR - This hydrometer is great but temperature correction is still necessary if your sample isn’t 155F!- - -I had been contemplating picking up this hydrometer for a while; my spectrometer is supposed to have auto temp correction but is still all over the place with readings, and not having to cool wort to take readings with a regular hydrometer was super appealing. So I finally pulled the trigger and purchased this along with their test jar, another great purchase in itself. The thing is rock solid. Still can’t help but pucker when putting it in hot liquid but that fear quickly passes. Readings are super easy! The scale is very easy to read, you can easily factor out the meniscus when measuring. However, here’s where I knock a star off…This hydrometer is calibrated for 155F, and I knew that. Obviously the high temp calibration is why I bought it. However I rarely mash that high so I assumed a temp correction would be necessary. Last week, I used the hydrometer for the first time. Took a pre-boil mash reading, the sample temp was 137F. I use Brewer’s Friend so I’m quite familiar with their Hydrometer Temperature Correction calculator, and I pulled it up to get a temp corrected hydrometer reading. Unfortunately, their calculator can’t factor calibration temperatures above 95F. Well crap! So I contacted the seller via their website and to their credit, they did have someone standing by on their live chat. I asked if temp correction was necessary when the sample temperature was 137F and was told no, the discrepancy would be minimal. Interesting. Knowing that a temp discrepancy that sizable at fermentation temperatures can make a pretty big difference, I was skeptical but I went with it.Fast forward to last night, I found a temp correction calculator that can compute calibration temperatures of 155F. Turns out my OG of 1.044 was actually 1.038 when temperature corrected! I know this discrepancy isn’t too big and can be acceptable for some, even myself in some instances. But in a lower ABV beer such as the one I brewed, this swing can have pretty big implications. So all-in-all this is a great hydrometer, especially when paired with their test jar. The seller was responsive on the fly when I had a question. But I am knocking of a star because temperature correction is still a big consideration and should, in my opinion, be noted in the instructions.

I recently decided to get into beer brewing with some friends and family. We've been experimenting over the last few months and adding new tools, tech, and trying different methods to see what happens. The first couple times it failed and we had one run that was decent and then a few other failures. It's fun and interesting that at best we make something great or at worst we don't make anything good and have a good laugh about it together. This tool looks and functions great as a beer Mashing Hydrometer which is calibrated at 155 Degrees Fahrenheit. Overall I'd recommend it from an amateur new brewer's point of view. :)

I dropped and broke my ATC Refractometer so finding this Hydrometer was great timing. Normally, taking a hydrometer reading during for first runnings, preboil and during the boil is a time consuming or tedious task. You have to cool the wort to 60F for an accurate reading. This "mashing" hydrometer is calibrated to 155F making is a great tool to measure at the stages mentioned above. I am not sure the usefulness as a "mashing" hydrometer unless you really want to stir, take off a sample, measure and probably return the sample to the mash. At least on my scale, 10 gallons of beer, I would never measure the mash gravity. I can't change it anyway.First runnings and preboil are useful for me to know the mash efficiency as well as to assess the closeness to my target. This helps to understand my process and equipment to identify tweaks or changes to be more predictable and make better beer.Word of caution, do NOT use this hydrometer post boil or post fermentation. Cold wort will have a very, very inaccurate reading. Heat the beer to 155F if you really want to use this on cold wort or beer.I was really pleased with the easy to read numbers. Many hydrometers have tiny number forcing me to use my cell phone camera to take a picture and zoom in.Comes in a very well protected case.Great product for the home brewer who wants to take hot side gravity readings.

This hygrometer works very well. I have another one and have compared the reading and it is correct. The font is large enough to be read in a cloudy must. It’s a little expensive, but works well.
