It would have been a nice addition to my country kitchen, but the jar was broken.

The glass jar showed up broken. It is packaged tightly, but the churn was inside the jar and the lid was not secure. It seems an extra turn of the wrist, while packaging the item, would prevent an apparently common situation that results in several returns. Also, once the jar is broke, the churn is basically useless because it doesn't fit your typical wide mouth mason jar. I'm not sure where to get a replacement, so I'm stuck with useless parts laying around until I figure that part out.It seems like a good idea on paper, but reality is not that nice.

Best part is the feeding time tracker band! I always forget to mark my jar because I don't have the right pen. The jar is huge!

I've needed something like this for a while. Be aware that it is a large container. The flip top lid is good for dormant storage in the fridge. I'm not sure about its holding power, and won't be testing it to destruction. Use the cheesecloth top after feeding so that the jar doesn't blow its lid.Volumetric markings are useful for keeping approximate volume. I'm not sure I'd trust them for measurements. The thermometer is just that, while the feeding band provides a dedicated elastic piece that you can approximate time and use as a marker for tracking level changes. The real star here, IMO, is the spatula. It says it has a stainless core, and I believe it. It's heavy in the hand, with no seams nor splits. Only the edge flexes, which is perfect when you need the combination of a clean wipe with a heavy hand. It is completely overkill for stirring up 100% hydration starters. It works great for stirring up shaggy, heavy dough. I do prefer my loaves to be a bit on the high-hydration side for that great puff and open, airy structure. While the jar may be in near constant use, keeping my population of baking assistants alive, the spatula will be performing many more duties around my kitchen.

I started making sourdough bread about 5 months ago and am upgrading as I can to things that will make that process easier. Previously I was using a 24 oz ball jar. And while that did work well, I have recently in the last month started baking a few extras every time to give to friends and family. So I’m now making about 12 loaves a week, 6 on each of two days. And the issue I was running into was the ball jars were not big enough for that for my starter and I had to use two of them. So basically when I was going to make bread I would have to feed a starter in two separate jars. So when I saw this 51oz jar I figured that would solve my issue. And it totally has! This is big enough to make at least enough starter for 6 loaves, I could probably even get 1-2 more out of it if I was intentional in how much I feed it to bake bread. But the container is also not so large that when I’m only feeding my starter and not baking bread I can just feed it like 30 grams each of flour and water to 5-10 grams of starter and it’s not an issue even at that small of an amount. It does come with a cloth cover, which I don’t use since it tends to dry my starter out on the top layer, but that’s nice if you do. It also comes with one of those thin and long spatulas that work wonderfully for mixing starter. Overall not a bad set!

I've killed more sourdough starters than I care to admit. This kit hopefully can make me a better grower. The measurements on the jar make it super easy to know and math at a glance. I'm holding off until I get back from vacation to start a new batch, but this kit even includes clear directions on how to raise and feed your starter. I love how everything is so easy to read, even for more experienced eyes. The jar has a super nice seal on it which makes it easy to pop in the fridge for time away when you want your starter to rest. The muslin cover fits over the jar nicely and will keep critters out and air in. From temperature to volume and tracking the size of the growth - this jar is a complete set. I'd happily gift this to anyone wanting to try their hand at sourdough! Quality, well-made product.
