As the water travels down the inside walls of the downspout, the rainwater adheres to the walls of the downspout and does not free-fall from the center. The Rainwater Colander installed inside the downspout captures water free of large debris in a 2-inch tall reservoir that has an outlet to attach to a garden hose or cap when not in use. The innovative design of the patented colander automatically diverts rainwater back into the downspout when the rain barrel is full, or a cap is attached.

If you do DIY you can figure out how to install this but the instructions aren't any help. I'm honestly not entirely sure what one part is for still, but I installed it 3 months ago and it works great. It keeps a low profile, fits snug, doesn't leak, can be faced either direction and captures plenty of water while allowing debris through the downspout. My only other negative is that the plastic grid in the capture bucket is a little brittle and I did accidentally crack one piece while installing it. It's not caused an issue though.

This diverted 50% of downspout rain water. Standard hose connector. A little noisy in hard rain.No direction adjustment .

Diverter works well but hose connections threads are a bit weak in cold weather, which is why I needed a replacement.

I used an oscillating saw to cut my steel downspout, which was quick and easy. It was a little tricky slipping this diverter into the upper downspout section because it's a tight fit, and I cracked the plastic part that goes inside the downspout slightly. It still worked fine. I expect it would go easier with a vinyl downspout.I decided not to fuss over setting the height of this diverter as the instructions suggested, which is supposed to automatically prevent the rain barrel from overflowing. Instead I added an overflow port neart the top of my rain barrel and ran a hose from that into a drain. I also put a shutoff on the fill line coming from the diverter so I can shut it off if I want to.The main thing I like about this diverter is that a standard garden hose can be connected from it to the rain barrel, simple and neat. The rain barrel can be closed, with no need for large holes and screens, and no splashing. It works great. A few tenths of an inch of rain filled a 30 gallon barrel. I've bought a 3 of these diverters now.

This product is great so far! My husband installed it and he said it was pretty simple to install. We had almost an inch of rain and I would say we collected 35-40 gallons of water! The barrel is almost completely full. I am very happy with this product so far.

The $22 price can't be because of manufacturing cost. The spigot I bought is really nice machined brass, a much more substantial item and it was $14. I guess the price point is because there isn't a huge demand.A few things to know--You have to cut a piece of downspout. I initially thought I could just put it between an existing joint. But, the crimped end on the bottom of a piece of AL downspout will not fit into the top end of this device.I did not bother with the connector bracket that came with it. I attached the downspouts above and below it with a couple screws each. You can use standard #8 by 3/8" downspout screws to attach the downspouts on both ends. Just drill pilot hole with the appropriate size drill bit.Obviously you aren't going to get 100% of the water diverted. It will depend on how hard it's raining. In a light rain, it looked like it was diverting 60-70% of the water. In a heavy rain, it was diverting a much lower % but you must consider that the limiting factor is going to be the 5/8" hose that's running from it.I was able to fill a 50g barrel in a couple hours in a moderate rain.

Without this handy gadget I was on rain barrel overload. I seriously underestimated how much water was coming off of my roof! The water was so fast that my barrels were overwhelmed with one rain and rhe overflow couldn't keep up. I love these and plan to buy more. I love that you can cap them off when you've "had enough." They were super simple to install and they work perfectly.

I thought this thing would capture a little bit of water and we'd have a decent amount after every rain. Nah, the water barrel is FULL every time I use it, I'm constantly trying find things to water just to not let the water sit too long.Install was super easy, just make sure you deburr the fresh cut gutter edges since it's a close fit. The bracket they shipped with to hold the bottom part doesn't quite fit on the gutter, but it still holds well enough for now.I'm very happy with how this one turned out, and it was way cheaper than alternative versions.
