Trying this new water/fountain heater out for first time. -3 degrees here in KC today! Snowing, frigid temperatures with that “Siberian Arctic Blast” we were warned about. Got everything ready, feeders stocked, Bluebird food and fruit, ready, water dish filled to bring with heating element running. Birds are eating and drinking, generally just hanging out by the food and water source on this exceptionally cold 🥶 few days. The heater is keeping water unfrozen at -3 below! I’ll update later since it’s supposed to drop even more to -6 by 1:00pm. There is about an inch’s worth of freezing on one edge of the fountain but shoot, the birds don’t seem to mind. Stay tuned.EDIT: it is 12:45pm, the temp went down to-5 below zero and the water is still unfrozen. There is a small part, an inche’s worth that froze but overall the birds continue to use the fountain.

I’ve used one of these heaters for three years. It’s not only worked during “normal” winter weather, but has also worked during some of the worst winter weather we’ve had in more than a century (-30 to -40 degree windchills). Some thoughts about it:1. I was afraid squirrels and other “chewers” may try to chew through the exterior extension cord that went to this heater. I ran that cord through some PVC pipe, which has kept all those “chewers” safe.2. Since this heater, like most such heaters, doesn’t have an automatic shutoff should the birdbath go dry, it’s important to keep checking the water level. Some things I’ve found that have seemed to speed up dissipation have been:-A combination of very cold temperatures, low humidity, high winds, and excessive usage by wildlife.-Steam fog (mist) that comes off the surface of the water under certain conditions.-Silly birds that take big baths in the dead of winter.3. During our historically bitter weather, ice started to form around the edges of the birdbath. Interestingly, I discovered that ice helped keep the birdbath from drying out, possibly because of displacement, and/or the heater melting the underside of the ice. As a result, I didn’t have to refill it as often.4. The birdbath AND heater must be cleaned periodically to ensure the heater continues to function properly.5. Many people have complained about the short cord on this heater However, each type of heater must meet certain standards to be safe, which is why this particular heater has such a short cord. There are heaters that serve the same purpose, but have longer cords. All my little outdoor friends and I have been so happy with this heater, I ordered a second one as a backup. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in making sure their outdoor friends have a nice drink of water throughout the cold and sometimes bitter winter.December, 2022 Update: We had a huge arctic air mass, complete with 50+ mph winds pass through our area. Although it was BITTER COLD, this heater kept away the ice, much to the benefit of all the little creatures needing a drink, during the worst weather conditions imaginable. I'm so thankful for this heater, that keeps going and going, and going!!!!

This is exactly the same product I bought three years ago, which cost me much less at that time. The price this time was $20 more. It does a good job keeping the shallow bird bath water liquid through the Canadian winter. It has a 3 year warranty and somehow at the 3 year mark the appliance stops working. It is like it has been programmed that way. It has happened to me every time I bought a new one (over the years). For these reasons I could not give it a 5 star rating.

Keeps water thawed even after a night with temp of-16C. Pictures were take in early AM on the 16th. I live in Fredericton N.B.Water was tepid not cold and a chickadee was waiting her turn. Water evaporates, so must be topped up as needed. Always ensure de-icer is submerged . I topped up water after taking pictures.Birds need water twice a day a day this product certainly helps. Even though it's winter I remove the water periodically and give the bath a quick cleaning. The green item in the picture is a water tight cord lock. Same company. Does its job. Recommend it.SO FAR DO GOOD. I would recommend this item.

Arrived quickly in good shape. We use it for our bird bath. We haven't had for an entire winter here in Northwestern Ontario where it gets -40/-50 but so far keeps the water liquid at -10/-15. The birds love it! Sometimes there's 5 of them in there bathing. When everything freezes, water becomes very important and hard for the birds to get.The husband says it doesn't use a lot of power so we have left it plugged in over night. It is heavy duty metal, not cheap. No regrets with this purchase.

I had this model ice melter for seven years and it did a great job, so I was pleased to see it still available. However, when it came it did not work, and froze in the birdbath overnight. I returned it easily and received a replacement. Unfortunately that did not work either, and the heater froze into the bird bath so I returned it for a refund. I wrote to the company and told them what had happened. They suggested I do an air test, but to me it seems that if both heaters froze into the bird bath, then something was definitely wrong. I even had an electrician test the electrical outlet and the extension cord as well as the heater. The outlet and cord were fine but he could get no reading for the heater.I will leave it until the fall, and try another heater. Disappointed, as the first one, seven years ago, worked very well.

I'm amazed that so many people love this thing. So far I've had 3 and all 3 run 24/7 and never shut off. Never. I had called the company and they said to put it in the freezer to reset the unit. That of course doesn't work. No matter what temperature the water is, if they are plugged in, they are heating the water. The 2nd one that I got from Amazon also failed to turn off, so I sent it back to the manufacturer and asked them to please test to make sure I got one that would work properly and if they couldn't, that I would like a refund. When my replacement finally arrived, first thing I notice is that it's VERY used. I mean scratched, dented, ridiculously beat up. Not only that, the moment I put it in 68 degree water INSIDE MY HOUSE, it turned right on and heated it up to nearly 80 and did not shut off. At all. It's not only the fact that this would cost over $15.00 a month to use (the box says pennies to operate - they must mean per hour), it keeps the bird bath water so warm that it evaporates constantly. I never had that with my old heater, which sadly is no longer available. So this product does keep the water warm. Very warm. You won't have any ice but just be aware of the extra unnecessary cost involved. And don't count on having the company sending you a working replacement. All that did for me, was lose out on the 5.95 shipping cost to send the defective unit back, only to get another defective one as a replacement. Used at that.
