Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. Dedicated lens hoods are designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

Fits but doesn't click on lens tightly.

I am unsure what the other reviews have received. My order just came in and is made of generally strong plastic and fits like a glove. This feels very much like and exact copy of what I expect Nikon originally shipped with this lens. Strong plastic but light enough to not add too much weight to an already heavy lens. No sign of vienettes when mounted to my camera!

After breaking the original hood, I was worried that I could find a replacement given that the lens is no longer produced. This hood is not flimsy at all, and is a great value for the money.

Works well and makes my lens look huge, but thankfully I can turn the hood around on the lens for storage in my bag.It is matte finish and seems to be well made. The only issue I would say that I had with it is that it is a little hard to get exactly in the right place on the lens so you can twist it and lock it on. Other lens hoods i've used in the past weren't as tricky, but oh well, I'll get used to it I suppose.

Falls off all the time. Poor construction and design. Will not protect your lens like a real Nikon hood. Since you have a couple thousand dollar lens, get the better hood.

Don't bother spending extra on the OEM version. This hood is just as good and at a fraction of the cost. Hard plastic, just like OEM. Good fit. What else could you ask for.

at less than a 3rd of the cost of the manufacturers you have to look at it. The plastic does feel just as strong as the OEM, which was important to me as I always keep the hood on my lenses to protect them from banging into things. its sometimes doesn't latch as well when you screw it on, it did fall off 3 times on a LONG day shoot but now I just make sure I connect it snuggly when first attaching it and haven't had any troubles. for the money, its a good buy.
