This is so helpful when I'm walking two dogs, even without the belt. I did find a regular belt works better than the one it came with, it just felt sturdier, and my 65lb energetic Labrador is easier to handle with the extra grip along the handle. I can even attach both ends to her harness and hold the big loop that results to keep her closer. I find the leash alone without the belt great, and I can attach the leash to a regular belt (I use one of those leather woven ones without holes for the fastner, you just fasten according to your waist size, and it is flexible enough to accomodate the leash's hardware snap onto it after "squishing" it together). Anyway, it has been awhile since I bought this, and I remember the waist portion didn't work out so great, but the leash itself has been fantastic. I use it to walk her often without the hands-free belt portion. My dog is young and likes to pull when it suits her, the issue with the belt wasn't that she pulls generally, it's that we'd be walking along just fine for awhile and she'd see a squirrel and I'd feel like my waist was being torn in half, lol, as she jerked to run after it after walking so calmly a moment before. We're working on that.
