This Havahart trap works perfectly! It safely caught a pesky raccoon in my yard without harm. Sturdy, easy to set, and reliable. Highly recommend for humane catch-and-release!

Works fine. My problem is I'm after a single male cat to get him fixed, but I keep catching opossums. BUT, the trap works. You put food, set it up and wait for it to catch whatever. Holds large opossums. Did catch a raccoon but it was a bit squishy in there for that one. If you want to catch that kind of critters, yes it works.

This is a lightweight trap which has worked pretty well. The first animal I caught was a HUGE raccoon and he/she literally tore a wire out of the floor. The trap didn't work the few initial times because the raccoon was so large (30 lbs. or so) he could reach in to eat, and his body was partially still outside the trap door.Another reviewer suggested putting a bar inside the cage to get the animal to literally stoop lower and place more pressure on the trip plate. This worked very well!No one mentions it, but cat food works really well!I mentioned this is a lightweight trap. Putting the cage and animal in the back of my truck, the handle severely warped from the weight. It was too much weight for the type of wire used on the handle. The animal was trying to get out of the cage and ripped a wire out of the floor. There was a little blood either from its claw doing this or poked himself with this random wire that is now in the cage as it is trying to get out. The animal was strong enough to bend the trap door, but did not succeed in getting out! So far, everything was fixable.I have since purchased a professional grade trap which will hold up much better, but this is still a good animal trap and I will continue using this one too. And last but not least, I read the name brand on this trap and agree with the concept; Hav-A-Heart! I'm not a hunter and these are just wild animals trying to find food and survive.REVISED FROM... [I have to admit, this is a nice-looking trap (Cage). Used it last night only to find it empty this morning, the food eaten way in the back, the trap door sprung, but no Raccoon inside. Somehow, the animal was able to unlock the door... after his meal and escape? Was my rating of 3 stars too high?]

Very hard to use and not easy to set up. Once the door shuts it can be easily pushed open by the animal, what’s the point?! The price is not justifiable.

We had some feral cats hanging around that kept having kittens, so we kinda were infested with them. We got this live trap because it doesn't hurt them, and it is big enough and strong enough that they could get in but couldn't get out. It is made with good quality steel. Even though it has been out in the rain for a week, it hasn't rusted after a month. To trap the cats I put a cover over the cage to disguise it. For about 4 days, I tied the door open so that the trap wouldn't go off, and the cats could get used to the trap without being scared. I put food out every day, but each day I moved the food deeper inside the trap. Once they trusted it, I set the trap to catch them. Once caught, I get a jute bag and put over the opening. Then I open the trap, and they run into the bag. I can safely relocate them without harm to me or the cat. I usually only catch one at a time, but I have caught two at once, and they both fit in there peacefully. This is one of the best investments we have made!

I have a problem with groundhogs that have decided to move their entire social circle under my garage-sized shed. I called my local extension office, who quickly told me my only practically viable alternative is to trap them. I wasn't particularly enamored with the prospect, but sometimes you gotta do What You Gotta do. I settled in on the idea of catch and release. The Havahart trap has been a good investment, and not as much a pain as I anticipated. It's well made and thought out. With a small modification, its usability is also quite good. See Tip 2 below. It does require a little practice, especially for when you release the animal. When I use the trap and banana as bait, I get results within a day or two. I've trapped 8 groundhogs and 1 raccoon in a few weeks, usually with a break of a couple days in between trappings. I release them a few miles away in a wooded area. It's now pretty routine and not a big deal, well not for me anyway. The groundhogs may disagree, but they'll have to get over it. In any event, none have been physically harmed.Tips1. Always remember you will be dealing with a wild, stronger than you may think animal in a highly stressed situation whose objective is to get away however it can. Be careful!!!2. Modify your trap so you can easily open the trap door from above and to the side of the trap as follows. Using a nylon zip tie a little longer than door itself, attach the tie to the door handle and feed it back up along the top of the door so that the tie will protrude out on top of the cage. You will now be able to use the tie as a handle to pull the door open, while using your other hand to operate the release mechanism. This aids in setting the trap, but more importantly, by releasing the trapped animal from a safer position along side the trap with the animal having an unobstructed path to freedom.3. Cover your trap with a tarp or even the box the trap was packaged in so the animal will feel less threatened. Some light getting in seems to be OK.4. My groundhogs seem to be partial to bananas. I throw in the skins too. Each time I've caught one so far, ALL of the bait is gone, presumably eaten. They like apples too, but it seems to me that bananas is what really lures them in.5. Hozing off the trap in between trappings seems to be helpful, especially if the just trapped animal made a mess. The longer the animal is in the trap, the bigger the mess.6. Transporting a trapped animal is so much more convenient if you have a pickup truck.7. Read and follow the information that comes with the trap.I hope your experience will be as good as mine. Good luck.
